Europe as an entity and as an ideal is more needed than ever. The individual countries of Europe need the collective power of Europe to assert their interests, influence and values. Yet, as the impasse over Greece confirms, the continent is in crisis.
Many assume that some form of compromise is in the offing. Debt can somehow be kicked down the road. The Greek government will bend; the troika of creditors the EU, ECB and International Monetary Fund will bend and somewhere in the middle the two will come together.
I do not see it. Greece is part of a much wider problem. Athens is right to say that the situation is unsustainable; but the solution it proposes is wrong. The rest of Europe has imposed a burden on Greece that could never be borne for any length of time. I do not know what would happen in the UK if our economy contracted by 25 per cent; but I suspect it would be revolutionary...

Europe was never an entity. And I don't know what the "ideal" of Europe would be. If European civilization hadn't committed suicide in two world wars, Europe might be worth something.
You seem to be in a rather big hurry to grant the Russians their long cherished desire for warm water ports in the Mediterranean.
Don’t the Russians already have a warm port Sevastopol? Welfare state’s never last...
“Third Way” = Socialism
Tony’s “Third Way for Europe” refrain is just contemporary “Peace in Our Time.”
Europe’s Third Way will be peachy, once you exclude Jewish Delis and cartoon writers and descendants of famous painters who produce “unhelpful” videos.

The “third” way between what? Communism and Capitalism? Europe hasn’t tried Capitalism in about 100 years so maybe its time to go back to the “first” way.
Sevastopol is in the Black Sea which is an oversize landlocked lake. Access to the rest of the world requires passage through the Bosporus which Turkey, another member of NATO that many on FR seem eager to tell off, controls.
I recall that Germany tried some "Third Way" in the last century .....
