City University of New York is returning thousands of dollars to about 150 immigrant students who live illegally in the U.S. and overpaid for their tuition.
A student group called CUNY Dreamers told school officials late last year that many immigrant students from New York paid higher, out-of-state tuition even though they were eligible for in-state rates, a difference of about $4,000 per semester.
A CUNY spokesman said administrators conducted a review of enrollments on CUNY’s 24 campuses and began the process of returning excess payments.
New York is among 19 states that allow in-state tuition for immigrant students. Its law requires immigrant students to have attended a New York state high school or received their GED in the state.

My father attended CUNY in the early 30’s, when it was a good institution. Recent “admit anyone” policies have taken their tolls. About the only thing good one can say about this, is that the favored illegal alien students can only bring up the level of the student body.
Does anyone even think these illegals PAID any tuition? If anything, they got interest free student loans that will never be repaid. And now on top of that they will get some $4000 cash back.
Life is good. IF you’re an illegal resident.
I think this will open up a can of worms. All I have to do is present myself as Juan from Peru...illegally here....and get the in-state deal. Four years later, I leave and return to Mississippi....knowing I screwed over these stupid folks, and saved myself over $60,000 in costs. The only downfall is that I’ll have to accept the Juan name for the rest of my professional life.
This is theft. The foreign thieves should be thrown out... after first serving a prison term to pay off the debt incurred by stealing educational services.
And let’s not forget the politicians. They belong in prison.

And the rest committed credit theft, and credit identity theft to get their money.

The university should also reimburse the American out of state students who are registered to vote in New York. They live in New York long enough to be eligible to vote, the state has recognized them as New Yorkers. They really should be considered in-state students.
I am waiting for an enterprising student or students who file a class action lawsuit saying they arent being treated equally because they are out of state students.
since in-state rates are given due to families living in-state, and they’re now giving the breaks to illegals...
will they also give refunds to kids from other states that paid the higher amount?
I have many immigrant friends and others in Europe that would LOVE LOVE LOVE to come here legally. They are advanced degreed engineers and manufacturing experts. BUT, they are not the right skin tone and don’t have the correct last names. I tell them to just come visit, throw away all documentation, change their names to Juan or Maria Gonzalez, and say their parents brought them over 20 years ago. Heck, I’m ready to burn my passport sand off my fingerprints and call myself Juan Gonzalez from Tegucegalpa and here illegally. For the life of me I can not think of one single reason to remain a citizen anymore. None.
