DHS funding shutdown looms as key House vote fails

Washington (CNN)The Department of Homeland Security moved closer to running out of money Friday after the House rejected a bill that would have kept the agency open for three more weeks.

Unless another deal is reached by midnight, DHS will fall into a partial shutdown, leaving thousands of workers furloughed while forcing others to show up on the job without being paid.

The House vote was a shocking twist to a dramatic day on Capitol Hill. For most of the day, lawmakers seemed poised to avoid a partial shutdown. The House cleared a procedural hurdle earlier in the day, indicating that final passage of the bill shouldn't be in doubt.

But when the legislation came to the floor, dozens of Republicans voted against it because the legislation doesn't address President Barack Obama's immigration orders. They were joined by nearly all Democrats, who opposed the measure because it doesn't keep DHS open through the end of the fiscal year.

House Speaker John Boehner has been here before -- wedged between his hard-right flank and the Senate. House conservatives want to continue fighting to block the President Barack Obama's actions on immigration and want to go to conference to work out differences between the House GOP bill and the Senate Bill passed bill earlier Friday.

A bloc of moderate House Republicans who back passing the clean DHS funding bill from the Senate are balking at voting on setting up a conference committee to hammer out the differences between these two bills.

But because Democrats are opposing the short term bill Boehner now needs support from both camps in the GOP conference to pass the short term bill.

The House followed later in the afternoon with a rival plan that would only fund DHS until March 19. With plenty of last-minute wrangling and in dramatic fashion, the measure failed in the House with a vote of 203 to 224.

This battle has been brewing in Congress for months, since President Obama issued a series of executive actions giving legal status to millions of undocumented immigrants.

Democrats have successfully stopped bills that seek to overturn his actions, so to thwart the law, some Republicans have suggested defunding DHS.

The Democrats refuse to pass funding for Homeland Security unless millions of illegal invaders are endorsed as conquerors.

The very acme of treason.

A few thousand workers who probably have the weekend off anyway won't be funded. So what?

I hope the HOR holds. Anyone with even an ounce of integrity would say no more compromise with Obama after that veto of Keystone.

RE: The Democrats refuse to pass funding for Homeland Security unless millions of illegal invaders are endorsed as conquerors.

Unfortunately, this news will be twisted by the MSM to make it look like the REPUBLICANS ( who control both houses ) are playing politics with Homeland Security, not the Democrats.

"DHS will fall into a partial shutdown, leaving thousands of workers furloughed while forcing others to show up on the job without being paid."

Typical CNN BS. THE only part that would be affected would be Obambi's dictatorial amenesty edict. The rest of the DHS would function as normal. And what the MSM never mentions about these "shutdowns" is that furloughed employees get back pay once things are resolved.

Let it shut down. Permanently. America does not need a department of Reichland security.

But .. DHS NEVER CLOSES DOWN .. only unessential staff (such as clerks and secretaries) are allowed to leave. All officers are REQUIRED to remain on the job.

Yeah, they have to go without pay (temporarily) .. but they end up getting the money after the fight is over.

CALL THEIR BLUFF.

Couldn’t an executive order fund the DHS? They cut checks for AHA supplements.

Well if its anything like the “Shut Down” before, they will need to hire hundreds of new people to drive busses into Mexico to pick up illegals and bus them back here, to show that DHS is really important to keep the border secure.

Kinda like hiring new people to close, secure and guard the Blue Ridge parkway and the WW2 monument etc.
