Sun News Network shuts down (Canadian Conservative)

Sun News Network went off the air at 5 a.m. ET Friday after failing to find a new owner.

Programming on the channel was replaced with a Sun TV logo.

Sun Media Corp. issued a statement saying it spent months unsuccessfully trying to find a buyer, but financial losses meant it could not continue to operate.

"This is an unfortunate outcome; shutting down Sun News was certainly not our goal," said Julie Tremblay, President and CEO of Media Group and Sun Media Corporation.

"Over the past four years, we tried everything we could to achieve sufficient market penetration to generate the profits needed to operate a national news channel. Sadly, the numerous obstacles to carriage that we encountered spelled the end of this venture," Tremblay said in a statement

The network's website featured only a Sun News logo on Friday morning.

The network began broadcasting in April 2011, launching a right-of-centre programming schedule, but it has had a constant challenge attracting viewers.

Its supporters blamed the CRTC for not giving it the same access enjoyed by news channels operated by CBC and CTV.

"Fox News North" done in by the Canadian version of the FCC, which did not hold it to the same rules as the other more liberal broadcast networks.

This is what libs in America desperately want to do to Fox.

So what prevented a billionaire from buying it ?

The company was being harassed, not the electronics and brick and mortar

Some billionaire like Murdoch (or the Kochs) should buy it. (Or Beck should buy it for The Blaze.)

The advertisers “done it in”.

Few advertisers want a hard-headed conservative audience.
They prefer a mushy, manipulable liberal one.

Nothing would prevent anybody from buying it, but without being able to operate on par with other cable channels it’s a money pit.

It just means that there aren’t many conservatives in Canada. not enough to overcome the policy of the Canuck govt to silence free speech.

I was saddened and angry that Sun News had to go off the air. The deck was stacked against them from the get-go.

They were more hard-hitting than Fox, to be sure. Some very brave people, including Ezra Levant, Michael Coren, Brian Lillie, and more. I hope they land on their feet.

Still hoping a buyer will be found, but they’ll face the same obstacles.

Yes the left is dancing in the streets over this. Weirdly, for Americans who do not know, a handful of specially picked networks (Global, CTV, and CBC News) get special treatment in cable companies MUST put them in every basic cable package. The CRTS refused to give Sun News that treatment. It is no accident that CTV and Global are owned by the largest media conglomerates in Canada I am sure.

They would face the same problem of bleeding 10 million or so in losses every year. It did cross my mind though why some conservative billionaire doesn’t buy say CTV and slowly turn it to the right.

Yep, advertisers who benefit from a free and open society are more than happy to play ball with liberalism.

CBC has 14 times the audience Sun ever did. Yes, Canada is not conservative.
