Report: ‘Post Apocalyptic’ Streets of LA Piled with Tons of Garbage

They have to raise the taxes to hire more trash pickers...This kind of lunatic s**t is never ending.

Just take those convicted and sentenced to community service and have them pick up the trash and toss into the trucks.

Otherwise, take convicted County jail prisoners and do the chain gang thing. I recall news coverage a few years where Sheriff Joe in AZ had prisoners out on work details, and the prisoners earned money or extra privileges.

I had to do community service myself and we were picking up trash along highways, helping to build additions on churches, mowing and cleaning up old cemeteries, etc.

In my area any vacant lot (which have increased in number as businesses close up) has to have large cement blocks placed strategically around it to prevent anyone from getting a pickup truck in there. If they can, the lot will be filled with all kinds of appliances and such. Also, trucks will come in the middle of the night and dump piles of contaminated soil (this is NJ).

Disgusting...

We’re a mile from the 101 Ventura Freeway, and were just on it a few nights ago - saw no trash.
We’ve been here since 1969 and I’m not recalling freeway trash - anywhere!
Sure, travelers loose a towel or a sneaker, but it’s not long before it’s picked up.

Having a cell phone, whenever I see something, I call 911 and ask if a particular ‘incident’ has perhaps already been called in. If not, I give them the info and they say they will send someone out. Not to worry, not when I’m driving - -
Years ago I would have to wait until I got to my job, or home, and used the land-line to call it in!

I believe low-risk prisoners are ‘employed’ to spear freeway trash.

Anyone see Watter’s World on O’Reilly some weeks back, where an experiment getting people to throw away trash was to make the trash container hole like a basketball hoop? Yep, people enjoyed ‘hooping’ their trash.

Well, diapers - now I’ve seen that. In any parking lot outside any sort of store, whether a trash can is near-by or not.
To me, ‘they’ just plain ain’t gonna take the soiled diaper into their vehicle.
However, I have not actually witnessed this disgrace, surprisingly, I guess.

Exactly, my FRiend. Hard working, in my simple old-school mind, implies finishing up at work and taking care of your property on weekends. I cut, water and fertilize my lawn, which is small but well kept, as are the flower beds, veggie garden and rest of my property.

So do most of my neighbors. It's a nice working class neighborhood.

The Mexican tire store at the edge of the neighborhood, however, looks like a Mexican tire store. So does the taco shop. How hard working are you if your business looks like a dump?

A few years ago I saw a six story apartment building in Memphis that sat right beside the railroad tracks. Each apartment had a terrace. The garbage between the track and the building was about 5 feet high. People were just throwing it over the railing. I wonder what the people on the first floor think. And why does the city allow it?

When I was young and poor, right after college, I lived in a studio for a while in NYC with a college buddy. We were on the ground floor of a typical Upper East Side brownstone five story apartment building. The buiding had a central ventallation shaft with windows that opened onto it. It was about a 4x6 foot shaft, not very big.

Someone used to throw trash down out of their kitchen into the shaft. This was idiotic, and just meant that me and my roomate had to periodically go into the shaft and clean up all the garbage. Because they were coming from a ways up, the trash bags often broke, and worst of all they contained dirty diapers.

My room mate noticed that often there would be several bags come down at once, so when when he heard the fist one hit, he went and opened our kitchen window and looked up, and verified which apartment the garbage was coming from.

A few hour later we notice the couple and their baby leave for somewhere. My room mate, being a pretty good rock climber puts all the garbage in a couple of big trash bags, and climbs up to their window opening on the shaft. He proceeds to open the window, and goes inside. He then proceeds to throw their garbage all over their apartment.

When they came home they were irate, came and yelled at us, to which we just laughed and said "turn about is fair play". The landlord told us he laughed too, when they complained to him. Needless to say they never threw garbage down the air shaft again.
