It’s crunch time for Tony Abbott (Australia's conservative Prime Minister in deep trouble)
Herald Sun (Melbourne) ^ | 2nd February 2015 | Andrew Bolt

I HATE to say this of such a good man, but Tony Abbott may be finished as Prime Minister after the apparent defeat on Saturday of Queensland’s Newman Government.

Abbott is blamed — rightly — for helping an LNP government with a record majority crash to a near-certain defeat.

Some panicky Liberal MPs are now moving to dump Abbott, with former minister Mal Brough suggesting he’s been asked to challenge just to bring a contest to a head.

Abbott has warned that changing leaders inevitably makes things worse — that history shows “you do not change leaders”.

But history in fact shows that replacing Bob Hawke with Paul Keating won Labor another election. Replacing Julia Gillard with Kevin Rudd saved a dozen Labor seats in 2013.

Replacing South Australian Premier Mike Rann with Jay Weatherill saved Labor again last year. Replacing NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell with Mike Baird has been a stunning success.

It works, provided a failing leader is not replaced by a dud like Gillard. That said, uniting behind a contrite Abbott could still be the Liberals’ best hope, because almost every alternative is a big gamble.

Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop, the most likely replacement, has limited experience in domestic portfolios and was such a failure as shadow treasurer that she had to be replaced.

She’s shone in foreign affairs, but that’s politically an easy gig.

Then there’s long-time Abbott rival Malcolm Turnbull, but he was a flop as Opposition leader, antagonising his team with his global warming evangelism, his verbosity, his tin ear and high-handedness.

His leftism is another problem. Would Turnbull again back some form of carbon tax, or gay marriage, and would Liberals revolt?

Does Obama have another ‘team’ in Australia helping the socialists with their campaign as he does in Israel?

met an Australian woman in Hawaii a few years ago and we talked politics...she educated me to the fact the liberal party in Aussie runs parallel to the conservative party in America...

I’m not sure if it can be fairly linked to Obama, but Americas’s “MoveOn” organisation helped to set up an Australian copy called “GetUp!” which engages in all sorts of misinformation - and there are other groups that are even worse (outright lies spread through social media by anonymous left wing posters, that are then shared by the gullible who want to believe them if they match their prejudices)

Maybe I missed it in the article but why exactly is Abbott in trouble? Something about giving Prince Charles a knighthood? Really?

It was Prince Phillip, and there’s more to it than that - that’s just the latest thing the hysterically screaming left wing lunatics have jumped onto.

They are determined to hate Abbott - they set up webpages on Facebook with names like “Tony Abbott - Worst Prime Minister Ever” the day he was elected, before he’d even taken office. They have created this image of him in their own heads and have spread it somehow even where it has no basis in reality. Tony Abbott could cure cancer and achieve world peace - and they’d start screaming about how he was adding to overpopulation.

A large section of the media helps them too.

The Knighthood decision was in fact entirely routine (Canada and New Zealand gave the Prince their highest honours in the last few years - Australia was just following suit in line with general Commonwealth practice) but the media and the left wing ‘intelligentsia’ went insane claiming it showed he was ‘out of touch’ and ‘more British than Australian’ (he was born in the UK - and we have our own ‘birther’ style movement here claiming he never renounced his British citizenship (you can’t be a Member of Parliament with dual citizenship, although there are no issues with being a foreign born Australian citizen - and Labor’s Julia Gillard was also British born).

OK, thanks. Insane left-wing press is something I can understand.

As the article explains, Australian politics has been volatile in recent years with coups coming from the backbenches deposing leaders. Its happened in the Labour Party and even in the Liberal-National Party with Tony Abbott deposing the former leader Malcolm Turnbull because he supported the carbon tax.

It’s all about power and winning elections. If the leader looks bad panic sets in and the leader is kicked out.

Australia is a strong sporting nation, more so than this country, and you know how NFL teams get shook up when the team looks bad with coaches out the door.

Obama is not involved in Aussie politics. It has a mind of its own.....

Sounds like Turnball would be Obama’s man in an intra-party squabble
