“Stanford douchebags” ruining San Francisco?
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | January 29, 2015 | Beth Spotswood

Author, founder of Salon.com, and Bernal Heights resident David Talbot recently made a speech at Stanford which was then published in 48HillsOnline.com decrying “Stanford douchebags”, gentrification, and Mayor Ed Lee. Talbot’s strong words for Stanford students have struck a chord up north in San Francisco, and his speech is rapidly going viral.

I don't think the folks from Stanford are the ones pooping on the sidewalks in San Francisco

How does one “ruin” a cesspool?

I was in SF about 4 years ago. Little Italy and other areas that I saw looked pretty nice. I’d say gentrification worked out pretty nicely for SF.

Stanford is, what? 25-30 miles out from SF? I’m going to have to come back to this thread later when there’s more information. Not gonna click the link.

But it is hard to imagine how Stanford could possibly harm SF. His other problem was ‘gentrification,’ so maybe there’s a relationship he’s trying to connect there between the educated Stanford grads and faculty and the loss of poor and/or working class ‘hoods in the City by the Bay? But in any case, absent more info, his name-calling seems unwarranted.

The owners of old San Francisco, in the 1870’s-1920’s, covered its neighborhoods with stately mansions and lovely Victorian townhouses. These were rich people. The Stanford %$*E%$ of their day made San Francisco what it is, architecturally and economically. The city has been living off their legacy ever since.
This silly fellow wants back a San Francisco where the neighborhoods had become cheap and run down, and so affordable to the bohemians and hippies. That was one stage of existence, not the whole of it, and not the most edifying one.
There are problems with the lack of culture and the crassness of the latest tech industry arrivals (and they are largely not gay, the gay thing was a stage, apparently, and it is slowly passing), but they are an improvement over some of the previous populations that have infested this place.

Kind of hard to tell the difference between douchebags in SF ... maybe they need to carry signs .... SanDB or SFDB.

He is complaining about an influx of well paid tech industry workers, some of which are from Stanford, who have been buying up property and driving up rents the last few years as the Bay Area and Silicon Valley have been in a tech boom recently.
Previous tech booms were centered in the valley and peninsula, but this one has more of them moving into SF proper.
This has annoyed the old left and the old bohemians, as well as slum residents, who are finding it too expensive to stay.

people who sh*t in the streets of San Fransicko are mostly residents of SF

now then, many of them were atracted to move there...
by the SF politicians...
who offer the highest or broadest sorts of welfare benefits, PLUS there are several BIGTIME free hot cooked meals charity restaurant operations...with free clothing, free health care, free mail and telephone services, free transit passes, free this and free that

it is SF’s politics that have created all the “douchbags shitting on the streets’

Correct. And this is in a city where a 2Br/1ba 1000sqft shack built in the 1920’s-30’s over a garage on a 25x100 lot is the median house, and it would probably sell for $600K.
Studio apartment rent is easily $2000
The homeless thing is all an insane muddle of politics and misplaced sentimentality.

Younger, college educated, mostly white, people today are moving into the cities. I see it here in DC. Neighborhoods that were historically black going back generations are now becoming gentrified, forcing the black families to move out to (primarily) PG County in MD. Those same areas were white before ‘urban flight’ so the pendulum is swinging.

My own thirty-somethings live in their respective cities. Don’t want to own a house, a car, or (horrors!) live in the burbs.

California is a state full of douchebags, dreamers, Illegals, gay and BLT’s, thugs, nitwits, halfwits, dimwits, dipshits, con men, Mexicans, Moslems, muggers, buggers, bushwhackers, hornswogglers, fudge packers, bull dykes, train robbers, bank robbers, ass-kickers, communists, and atheists. What it needs is an enema. Start feeding the hose up SF rectum.

That old shack is now around a million dineros. The average used home price in SF is over a mill. Mostly caused by foreign buying (PRC especially )
