Israel says 2 soldiers killed in Hezbollah strike near Lebanese border

Israel's military says two of its soldiers were killed and another seven were wounded in a Hezbollah strike Wednesday on an army convoy near the Lebanese border.

Israel's military responded to the anti-tank missile strike on the convoy with aerial and ground attacks on Hezbollah positions in Lebanon. Lebanese security officials told the Associated Press that Israel fired 25 shells across the border. The Israeli Defense Forces said that residents of the area had been ordered to remain in their homes.

The Lebanese terror group Hezbollah earlier claimed responsibility for the attack and said it destroyed a number of Israeli vehicles. A Spanish U.N. peacekeeper was also killed in the clash.

A statement from Hezbollah also said that the attack was carried out by a group calling itself the "heroic martyrs of Quneitra," -- suggesting it was retaliation for an Israeli airstrike on the Golan Heights on Jan. 18 that killed six-Hezbollah fighters

I wonder if this is "payback" for the Iranian General Israel took out last week?

No mention of type of vehicles IDF was in, nor "missile" used against them. I surely hope they were not using another M113 as they were last summer in Gaza....Perhaps a newer RPG used? 30 series?

There are photos out there.

One report called them “anti-tank” weapons and the completely destroyed vehicles were relatively small and lightly- or un- armored.

Jerusalem Post says they were Russian 9M133 Kornet missiles. I understand they are expensive and specialized.

It MAY be that the patrol was not using an armored vehicle and if that is true, heads must roll for that stupidity. Not that it would have stopped the Soviet, oops, I mean Russian “Coronet” missile from inflicting damage but it MIGHT have saved lives.

Hezbollah fired 5 missiles at convoy

Hezbollah fired 5 Kornet guided anti-tank missiles at IDF vehicles this morning, Channel 2 reports. The first hit the Isuzu D-Max pickup truck, killing the company commander and another soldier.

The occupants of the two trailing vehicles quickly jumped out and found cover, moments before the other four missiles hit. The move likely saved their lives.

Yes. Hezbollah is supported by their fellow Shias in Iran.

IDF checking whether Hezbollah fired from inside Israeli territory

The IDF is checking whether the Hezbollah operatives who fired the anti-tank missiles at two IDF vehicles entered an Israel-controlled zone on the western slopes of Mount Dov, Ynet reports.

If true, the operatives entered Israel, fired the missiles, and then escaped back to Lebanon.

The military vehicles travelled on a civilian road in the village of Ghajar two kilometers away from the border when they came under a heavy Hezbollah ambush, consisting of five to six Kornet missiles, a senior army source said. He estimated that the attackers were four to five kilometers away from the vehicles.

A military D-max vehicle was the first vehicle hit in the attack, prompting all of those inside an IDF jeep behind it to quickly evacuate the vehicle before it too was hit with missiles. The subsequent injuries came from military vehicles nearby.

The source stressed that the vehicles travelled on a road used jointly by military and civilian traffic, and that civilian cars were also in the vicinity of the attack. One house in the village was also struck by a missile in the attack.

Hez used Kornets in the 2006 conflict and caused heavy damage to Merkeva tanks. They likely fired multiple missiles at this convoy since the Israelis sometimes employ active protection countermeasures on their armored vehicles.

Bad situation. The Spanish UN “peacekeeper” was supposedly killed in the Israeli counter-attack, so now the EU is all riled up (against Israel, of course).
