Perry, Cruz thrill Iowa conservatives at 2016 field's first big gathering

DES MOINES, Iowa — Texans Ted Cruz and Rick Perry courted Iowa conservatives on Saturday at the first major gathering of the 2016 Republican field — a chance for more than a half-dozen White House hopefuls to throw elbows, shape narratives, generate buzz and frame the choice to their advantage.

Perry, making his first foray as an ex-governor, cast himself as a seasoned executive who can actually point to achievements — unlike, say, a senator.

“I got a feeling that after six years of disappointment, of mediocrity and decline, a slow-course correction is not what voters are going to be looking for in 2016,” Perry said.

Cruz, who was elected to the Senate in 2012, urged Iowans to scrutinize records to make sure actions and battle scars match a candidate’s rhetoric.

“In a Republican primary every candidate is going to come in front of you and say, ‘I’m the most conservative guy that ever lived. Gosh darnit, whodidily, I’m conservative,’” Cruz said. “You know what, talk is cheap.”

At the daylong Iowa Freedom Summit, both played well among the 1,000 or so activists eager for an early look at the field.

Rep. Steve King of Iowa, a leading hardliner on immigration, co-hosted the event with Citizens United and insisted that the audience would hear from the next president — suggesting that anyone who skipped the event is an also-ran.

Former Sen. Jim DeMint, Heritage Foundation president and a key Cruz patron, was slightly more cautious. “Some of the best prospects for 2016” were at the event, he said.

Either way, declared Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, “Today’s summit begins the 2016 Iowa caucus season.”

‘Kissing Steve King’s ring’

Democrats sought to use King’s stance on immigration to taint any candidate who turned up. The party’s national chairwoman, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida, held court across the street.

Sounds like a veiled shot at Santorum to me.

“Leading Hardliner on immigration”

How the Left uses the MSM to shift the dial....

Simply advocating ordinary enforcement of immigration law makes you a “hardliner”?

The entire country was this way even up to about 1990. You can go back and listen to Barbara Boxer castigating illegals in her first run for Senate!

Discussion or debate of Amnesty has to completely off the table and ridiculed as shocking. This will actually move the dial back to the right.

It seems rather clear we are indeed as so many wise men pointed out better off with an enemy whom we can all appose and work to resist at the head than a traitors friend who coops our support for the enemies goals.

There seems a rather clear difference between so called ‘moderation & compromises’ out of necessity and out of choice. Our so called ‘friends’ have no need to do anything at all yet they choose to support the agenda they ran against rather than the one they promised to uphold. This isn’t even a thing anyone might call moderation, this is betrayal.

As Hamilton, Reagion, and Paine pointed out we will be better off in the long run with a wolf in his own clothing than voting for one that wears our own.

“Too bad Perry is so sold out to the illegal aliens..”

I could never vote for him because of that. Just as I couldn’t hold my nose and vote for McAmnesty either.

Besides, his debating skills 4 years ago were embarrassing to watch.

I listened to a bunch of the speeches live. I thought that Ben Carson’s was the best. (I’m not a fan of him for President, for reason’s I’ve posted on.)

Cruz’s was very good, and noticeably more polished than others. Walkers was heartfelt. I didn’t think it was that great a speech, but apparently a lot of others did.

Trump, who I am not a fan of, was really fun. His ego is just so outsized it’s amazing, but I still enjoyed it as pure entertainment.

Among the people who have some sort of shot I think Cruz and Walker both helped themselves.

I missed Palin! Gotta check that out on you tube.

Not to mention his open sellout to crony-capitalism via pharmaceuticals.

But his gestures were better this time.
Not good, and obviously not sincere, but “better”.

Perry, Bush and Romney should grasp each others hands tightly, and go away.
