Biden bemoans breach between cops and their communities

The United States must "repair the breach" between police and the communities they serve, Vice President Biden argued Monday during a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day speech.

"We need to agree in this nation on two basic statements of truth," Biden said during a speech to the Organization of Minority Women in Delaware. "Cops have a right to go home at night to see their families. And two, all minorities, no matter what their neighborhood, have a right to be treated with respect and with dignity. All life matters." In the wake of police killings of unarmed suspects in Ferguson, Mo. and Staten Island — as well as the assassination of two New York City police officers — Biden said both sides have "got to start seeing one another."

"We have to recognize the black male on the corner is also a kid who likes to draw and might turn out to be a great artist one day," Biden said. "We also have to recognize that cop on the beat is also a mom who plays basketball."

"There are bad actors every place you go," Biden added. "But the majority of people are decent."

Biden bemoaned crime and violence, and said that the concerns of parents were compounded by "the fear that your child may be presumed to be a gang member or a suspect or someone in authority looking at that child and seeing only a profile."

At the same time, he said communities must do more to recognize the "humanity" of law enforcement officers.

"We can solve this problem," says Biden. "Let's not forget who we are and what we've done...we have come very, very far."

The Obama administration has taken a number of steps intended to improve relations between minority communities and police in the wake of the high-profile shootings, and the protests they sparked.

On Friday, the president ordered new regulations governing the sale of military surplus equipment to local police forces.

He's also asked for funding that could purchase 50,000 body-worn cameras for police officers, something for which the family of slain 18-year-old Michael Brown has lobbied. And Obama impaneled a new task force, led by Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey and former Assistant Attorney General Laurie Robinson, to examine the issue of police and community mistrust. The group held its first meeting earlier this month in Washington.

Here’s a suggestion Joe — close down the “RAP” industry.

Another suggestion: Stop the legalized theft via “civil asset forfeiture”.

We don’t need “better” cops. We need better communities.

The individual homes and families that make up the communities have had varying degrees of functionality and self-motivation. The dysfunctional and unmotivated families are found everywhere, but sometimes, in far greater concentrations than elsewhere.

The emphasis, at least since the passage of the legislation that was to create the “Great Society” under LBJ, has been on providing only the material goods to these homes, which resulted in a series of actions whose actual effect, intended or otherwise, has been to FRACTURE the family structure. This death spiral has almost totally demolished the concept of individual responsibility, and when there is some attempt to impose order, the feral residents, lacking any sense of domestic tranquility, lash out like wolverines or Tasmanian devils. Yet this gets translated into “police brutality”?

What a strange inversion.

This from the administration that has Eric Holder tell the Trayvons that they’re the good guys and the cops are the bad guys.

Agree 100% friend and I've never had any assets seized.

It is one of the most unconstitutional, un-American, laws on the books.

Your comment is absolutely "spot on."

The essential first step in improving relations, of course, is to get outside meddlers out of the picture. Local law enforcement is a local matter; a dealing between local police and the communities that they serve. Outside mischief makers can certainly stir up trouble--just as this Administration has repeatedly demonstrated. It is very unlikely that they can play a constructive role; since their very presence encourages self-seeking agitators to maneuver for possible or perceived advantage.

And then there was LBJ’s Comprehensive Study of “The Police” in 1967. Exactly, what part of that very expensive study was ever implemented? Politicians will take any side that might bring them money!

Democrats and Republicans have come to live on issues not solutions.
