About 1 Million Kids Are Now Eating Dinner at School
The Daily Signal ^ | January 18, 2015 | Kate Scanlon

First came lunch, then breakfast. Now, schools are serving dinner, too.

There’s a growing demand for schools to feed students dinner before they come home, according to the Associated Press.

Many low-income students are already provided with breakfast and lunch while they are at school. As part of the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act—a law signed by President Obama in 2010—a pilot program was developed to provide free or low-price meals after school as well.

As of last year, about 1 million students across the country received dinner or an after-school snack before going home.

“When kids are hungry, they don’t pay attention,” Bennett Kayser, a school board member for the Los Angeles Unified School District, told the AP. “This is something that should have started years ago.”

Evelyn Ruballos, 10, noted that she “usually only eats crackers” after school. “And then I just go to sleep,” she said.

The demand for dinner exceeds those who are in need: Some busy families have expressed desire for their children to come home already fed, freeing up time after school for sports, homework or family activities.

Rachel Dunifon, a policy professor at Cornell University, told the AP that the meals might “help alleviate stress.”

“It could actually be good and open up more time for families,” she said.

Rachel Sheffield, a policy analyst for The Heritage Foundation’s DeVos Center for Religion and Civil Society, said that expanding a broken welfare system without first solving its problems is not an efficient way of helping those in need.

“The federal government currently operates about a dozen programs that provide food assistance to poor and lower-income Americans,” Sheffield observed. “On top of food programs, there are about 70 other means-tested government welfare programs that provide cash, housing, medical care and social services.

“Tragically, this welfare system has failed to truly help the poor achieve self-sufficiency. Rather than continuing to expand a broken system, policymakers need to work to reform it.”

I hear that many schools serve three meals a day during the summer, and families may eat, too.

The way to put an end to this is to tell them that they will eat whatever Moochelle says they will eat, just like their free lunches at school.

I guess their mothers are too busy being crack whores to actually use their EBT cards to buy food.

The schools, taxpayers, feed them breakfast, lunch and now dinner. How much do you want to bet that the taxpayers still provide the same level of EBT, WIC, That the families would be due if they fed their children the way they are supposed to.

All this does is teach parents they don’t need to be responsible. If kids are hungry - it is the parents fault and duty, not the schools.

That is one million too many. Where are their parents? Who is paying for this? Just another effort by the Rats and every alphabet agency to make another generation permanently dependent on a handout, the government, and robbing them of their self-esteem, their vision, initiative, and work ethic. They are making slaves of all the little children, useful idiots one and all. Sad........

I guess the Free Stuff Army doesn’t consider preparing and eating dinner as a family count as family activities.

But we all know what this is about. It is about addicting another generation to the government teat and maintaining the democrat votes of the useless lazy degenerates who don’t want to feed their own children.

With EBT cards at record highs, where is the parental unit?
I’ll bet the homes of these starving kids have flat screen TV’s and a whole host of other electronic stuff.
There are a bunch of private sector charities that feed the people, maybe that’s why there’s so many obese, they overeat on all the free meals.

Some busy familieslazy, self-serving, ignorant, assinine, freeloading, f***ed-up dingbats have expressed desire for their children to come home already fed, freeing up time after school for sports, homework or family activities.

FIXED.

“Just another effort by the Rats and every alphabet agency to make another generation permanently dependent on a handout, the government, and robbing them of their self-esteem, their vision, initiative, and work ethic. “

You may blame the Democrats and the bureaucracy. However, since January 2011, every appropriation of funds from the federal treasury has been approved by the Republican House of Representatives. Without an appropriation of funds the program cannot exist.

The Republicans are now in charge of both the House and the Senate. How many programs will be defunded in 2015? My bet is zero.

No, it isn’t right. I guess at least the kids would be eating.

But I don’t know how the EBT works. Can any store accept it? Even a liquor store (I would hope not).

Can people use the card to buy something, then return it and get cash?

If children go to bed hungry in this country, we need to find out why instead of making schools completely responsible for their well-being.

Where are their parents?

There are 2 different types of benefits loaded on an ebt card. One is cash, which they can use just like a debit card almost anywhere now. The other is food stamps which can be spent anywhere they take food stamps.
