The Joke Must Remain On Radical Islam
The Aspen Times (CO) ^ | January 15, 2015 | Melanie Sturm

So a priest, an imam and a rabbi walk into a bar. The bartender says, “What’s this? A joke?”

Yes, and it’s funny, so accustomed are we to religious humor and wit that pokes fun at humanity and the powerful who govern it.

Though humor is in the eye of the beholder, its historic purpose is to induce us to Think Again. Truth-telling with laughter — whether by medieval court jesters, cartoonists, humorists such as Mark Twain, Charlie Chaplin impersonating Hitler in “The Great Dictator,” comedy troupes such as Monty Python or sitcom actors such as Archie Bunker — pushes conformist societies’ boundaries.

Today, enlightened Westerners living in human history’s freest society know that free speech doesn’t end where offense begins (except on college campuses, alas), no matter how insensitive or provocative. Even lowbrow, cringe-inducing satire is stomached, such as “The Interview,” Sony’s controversial North Korea spoof. It’s a trivial price to pay for liberty’s luxuries.

What’s blasphemous to some is social commentary to others, such as the “South Park” creators’ Tony Award-winning lampoon “The Book of Mormon,” or

The pope said today that one can´t insult or make fun of faith. Here´s why he´s wrong, as well as a large majority of Americans who either agree with him (32%) or aren´t sure (31%). Only 37% say it´s ok to blaspheme.

It´s scary that so many Americans don´t understand that the right to offend is essentially the right to disagree -- albeit disagreeably.

This pope is almost always wrong. If he were to say the sky is blue I’d have to go outside and check.

In comparison to that group about which no comedians will make a joke, Sarah Silverman said “I’ll tell you why we make fun of midgets: We’re not afraid of them.”

Many agree.

As one who is theologically nondenominational, but generally affiliated on core moral and spiritual issues with Christianity regarding the nature of good vs evil, it might be seen as devastating!

OTOH,it is also demonstrably true that this particular pope is fraudulently misquoted by various secular media outlets, much more often than any of his predecessors.

One need not be Catholic, or even have any belief in God to see that.

We live in extremely troubling times.

Yes! Muslim jokes!

This guy is complaining to a Muslim coworker about his wife. Finally he says, “Women! Ya can’t live with ‘em, and ya can’t kill ‘em!”

The Muzzie says, “Since when?”

There is an old joke (not particularly funny) about a priest and a rabbi who were having lunch together. They were friends and they were ribbing each other.

“Cone on, rabbi,” the priest said. “When are you going to break down and have a ham sandwich?”

To which the rabbi replied, “At your wedding, Father.”

“Piss Christ” was offensive. Christians organized, protested, boycotted, wrote letters, and sought a withdrawal of government funding.

The musical “The Book of Mormon” was offensive to Mormons. They protested, boycotted, expressed their disagreement publicly.

There are other such examples, and those things are perfectly fine.

Charlie Hebdo offended some Muslims by printing cartoons depicting Muhammad ( a rule designed to prevent idol worship, BTW.) Had they protested, boycotted, written letters, made speeches, and the like, one might agree or disagree, but that would be appropriate action. Instead, they chose to murder several people because they were offended.

And Dear Leader cannot even be bothered to show up for a symbolic protest of these murders.

You’re right. He is almost always wrong. I don’t think he’s doing it to be provocative but someone has his ear that is not that wise or smart.
