The coming Republican failure on immigration
Washington Examiner ^ | January 11, 2015 | Byron York

Republicans in Congress are nearly unanimous in opposing President Obama's unilateral executive action on immigration. Nearly all want Congress to overturn the president's edict. But how to do it? Republicans have two basic options, and as the time to act nears, it appears they are preparing to choose the one more likely to fail.

The first option is to pass a brief, simple bill that denies funding for the implementation of Obama's action, as announced last Nov. 20 and as outlined in memoranda from both the Department of Homeland Security and the White House. Such a move would be direct, unambiguous, and would focus specifically on Obama's action, which is what the controversy is about in the first place.

The second option is to begin with a defunding measure but then add other provisions, targeting not just Obama's executive action but also a large chunk of the president's immigration policy going back five years.

The first, simpler, option probably has the greatest likelihood of success. The second is more complex, and each additional component is likely to give some lawmaker — a few moderate Republicans or the Democrats whose votes are needed for passage in the Senate — a reason to vote again the measure.

While nothing is set in stone, it appears the GOP leadership seems to be headed toward the second option. In answering the president's overreach on immigration, Capitol Hill Republicans are engaging in some overreach of their own.

There is no opposing parties. Only an oligarchy that lords over us. The Republican Party is no longer and Democrats are just Republicans with different name. I am disappointed with our government as they are selling out the taxpaying public for their own benefit at every turn while saying the opposite.

A lot of people have been trumpeting the comments of Peter King and Rudy Giuliani lately about terrorism.

The GOPe which they speak for have no desire to secure our borders and restrict immigration which would be at least sone good things to take action on in the name of fighting terrorism.

Actions speak louder than words everytime.

How do they overturn the immigration debacle when all of their big money donors on the Chamber of Commerce want it to succeed?

Its the usual Bonehead traitor scam that fools no one.Just like the IRS nonsense hearing that phony Trey and Issa put on.
Scream and yell and lecture and then do nothing !
The DC elites hate the difficult white middle class and would rather rule over the uneducated illegal welfare grifters.

Oh, they are not stupid. They know exactly what they are doing.
Kabuki dances, show votes and grandstanding. Pure theatre. Nothing more.

The only game plan the GOPe have is screwing conservatives and Main Street. Priebus was on Hannity right after cromnibus talking about “give us a chance” bla bla bla. Well here is the Potemkin opposition Priebus was talking about in December.

They’re giving us a “conservative” bill they knowing full well it will fail instead of substantively engaging Obama. Reason being the progressives running the GOP are all in for amnesty. They just don’t want their fingerprints on it. That’s really what all this Kabuki is about, sadly.

The GOP had their chance.

They funded amnesty and Obamacare in the Cromibus bill.

Then voted for Bonehead as Speaker.

Everything is is just theatre.

Not exactly. There is no opposition party to the Obama agenda but there are two parties. The Dems have an actual core ideology and values they are willing to fight for. The modern GOP is simply a bunch of careerists pigging out at beltway trough looking for the best deal they can get for their donors. For the right price they are happy to pimp out their districts. Dems never do that to their base.

We need a new SECOND PARTY... a party that believes in the US Constitution. A party that will give states the rights the constitution granted them.

And we’re supposed to just “move on” from the budget. BS. The GOPp (progressive) say here they are fighting obama’s immigration acts. Yet the cromnibus had full funding for Obama’s HHS and DOJ amnesty support programs. Well over a billion dollars, I believe.

Preemptively giving away the store is an interesting tactic if you really want to blunt the Obama agenda. Obviously, they don’t.

As I said on another thread, I concur:

‘Terrorism’ makes the news. But, for years and years our citizens and legal residents have been raped, murdered, robbed and harmed by illegal aliens. Yet there was never a War on Illegal Aliens. It is all theater. If Bush or any President cared about the safety and concerns of the citizenry they would have secured the border and dealt with the potential threats here. There will always be a 'threat' from someone who wants to do harm. But, you don't change our own society or laws to deal with a few nutjobs who kill people.

Agree. “Move on” to what?

The heavy lifting was done in the Cromibus bill Bonehead, Pelosi, Reid
and McConnell rammed through. It funded 99% of the years budget in that terrible bill.

So, there is nothing left for the GOP to do except grandstand, confuse and lie.
Pure Theatre. Nothing more.

It’s not a failure for the beltway GOPp. They’re getting what they want.

"The first option is to pass a brief, simple bill that denies funding for the implementation of Obama's action"

Obama's action is to not enforce the existing law. How do you deny funding to that?

Secondly, USCIS is funded almost entirely by user fees, not by Congress.

"The first, simpler, option probably has the greatest likelihood of success."

Idiot. It has zero chance of success.

They won’t. Republicans will legitimize it with an Immigration Package they call equitable that balances the dreams and hopes of the “migrants” (they will call them anything but “illegals”) who just want to contribute to this great country. They will recognize their petty little oversight of illegally invading this country with a fine and try to make they wait a little while before they can become citizens. IT WILL NOT BE AMNESTY!!!!! Republicans will bristle, bluster and posture against such accusations.

In the end, they will legitimize these illegals being here and they, the illegals, will seek immediate redress from the courts to automatically assume all rights, privileges, and benefits of citizenship. Count on it. They, Republicans HAVE to get this out of the way for 2016 to elect Bush.

The GOP is afraid to go that far. After this fails we will get a “border security” bill which funds the Obama-Boehner amnesty and DHS. Then it will be a GOPp/Dem/MSM triple tag team against conservatives. Just wait for: “How can you not support a border security bill?” bla bla. BOHICA

Marginalizing conservatives is really what this all about to the GOPe and Dems at this point. They have their money. SO we get subterfuge and running out the clock to the next budget “crisis”.
