House Speaker John Boehner (R., Ohio) was reelected to his post as leader of the Republican conference, but the rebellion was stronger than expected.
Boehner received 215 votes, of 408 votes cast. He needed 205 to win the speakership. Twenty-four Republicans voted for alternatives, with a 25th lawmaker voting present. Half of those no votes went to Representative Daniel Webster (R., Fla.), who was backed by Representative Steve King (R., Iowa.) King was one of the ringleaders of the rebellion.
The race was closer than the 215-24 result suggests. If 35 Republicans had voted against Boehner, he would not have received a majority of the votes and the question would have gone to a second ballot, which the rebels hoped would effectively deny him the speakership.
If all 435 House members had voted, the rebels would have needed just 29 votes to stop Boehner.

But on the opening day of the new Republican-controlled Congress, a bloc of Tea Party insurgents fired off a warning shot to GOP leadership.
In a public roll call, 25 House Republicans defected from Boehner in the Speaker vote, double the dozen who launched a failed coup attempt against him exactly two years ago.
The anti-Boehner crowds message was simple: Dont expect any cooperation in the 114th Congress even with Republicans in charge of the Senate and holding a historic majority in the House.
Boehner needed a simple majority of the 408 lawmakers present to secure another two years in the top job; he won 216.
But a dozen Republicans backed GOP Rep. Daniel Webster, the former Florida state House Speaker. Reps. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) received three votes, while Rep. Ted Yoho (R-Fla.) got two votes, including his own.
Former Republican Study Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) also received two votes, while Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) and Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-S.C.) received one vote apiece.
Since the Constitution allows lawmakers to vote for any U.S. citizen for Speaker, Sens. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Jeff Sessions received one vote each, as did former Secretary of State Colin Powell. Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) received 164 votes.
Since the Constitution allows lawmakers to vote for any U.S. citizen for Speaker, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) received one vote, as did Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Fla.) and former Secretary of State Colin Powell.
In recent history, no sitting Speaker has seen so many defections from his or her own party in the first vote of a new Congress. Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) saw nine defections in 1997, while Dennis Hastert watched five fellow Republicans cast votes against him in 2005, according to an analysis by The New York Times.
The Republicans who voted against Boehner were Reps. Justin Amash (Mich.), Rod Blum (Iowa), Dave Brat (Va.), Jim Bridenstine (Okla.), Curt Clawson (Fla.), Scott DesJarlais (Tenn.), Jeff Duncan (S.C.), Chris Gibson (N.Y.), Louie Gohmert (Texas), Paul Gosar (Ariz.), Scott Garrett (N.J.), Tim Huelskamp (Kan.), Walter Jones (N.C.), Steve King (Iowa), Thomas Massie (Ky.), Mark Meadows (N.C.), Richard Nugent (Fla.), Gary Palmer (Ala.), Bill Posey (Fla.), Scott Rigel (Va.), Marlin Stutzman (Ind.), Randy Weber (Texas), Daniel Webster (Fla.) and Ted Yoho (Fla.).

National Review is the voice of the GOPe.
I’ll read elsewhere.
Thanks for stopping by.
Two more years of a testosterone free GOP. All the sobbing and crying is going to drive me crazy.
“Yes, it has always been pretty much a fait accompli that Boehner would be elected speaker. And yes, it looks like conservatives were unable to deny Boehner the victory on the first vote, although it was closer than I initially believed. That said, I think that both sides of this debate are wildly overreacting to what happened here. I think the anti-Boehner side is way too angry/disappointed, and the pro-Boehner side is way too smug and condescending to the anti-Boehner side.
The simple fact is that what happened today in the Speaker election is unprecedented in modern politics. Speakers of the House who gain seats do not face defections on this order, or anything even remotely like it. The fact that Boehner had 25 (at least) defections despite the absence of a credible challenger speaks volumes about the fact that the culture in the GOP Caucus is changing even if it is changing slower than some would like to see it change.”...................

No reason to get upset by all the theater.
Just understand that the GOPe is just as committed to controlling an ever bigger government as the ‘rats are.
just so much horse crap.
Nothing changes.
I’m done with the republican party hell with em.
Not a damn bit of difference between this horse crap president and his lackey Boehner.
Are people still convinced that we can “change the party within?” I still know Catholics who believe that about the Democrat party....
It’s time for a third party, folks. No if’s and or buts anymore.
All Republicans. Never, ever do you see the communists break ranks. Lenin's "Iron Discipline" rules that party.
The Republicans who voted against Boehner were Reps. Justin Amash (Mich.), Rod Blum (Iowa), Dave Brat (Va.), Jim Bridenstine (Okla.), Curt Clawson (Fla.), Scott DesJarlais (Tenn.), Jeff Duncan (S.C.), Chris Gibson (N.Y.), Louie Gohmert (Texas), Paul Gosar (Ariz.), Scott Garrett (N.J.), Tim Huelskamp (Kan.), Walter Jones (N.C.), Steve King (Iowa), Thomas Massie (Ky.), Mark Meadows (N.C.), Richard Nugent (Fla.), Gary Palmer (Ala.), Bill Posey (Fla.), Scott Rigel (Va.), Marlin Stutzman (Ind.), Randy Weber (Texas), Daniel Webster (Fla.) and Ted Yoho (Fla.).
The only place you will see these names in the next Congress is on the bathroom walls.
The arrogant Boehner is going to be really bold from here on out. The communist’s have taken over congress.

BTW, do these people have an even passing acquaintance with grammar? "Was" should be "Were."
/SPIT on both scores
Just call him Nancy B.!
There are a few that weren’t scripted, but the majority were.
People here drag on Rush, but over the last year he’s become openly hostile to the gope-STAB and supportive of TEA leaders.
We need him to get that 22-million audience’s ass in gear and primary every single one that voted for Boehner starting TODAY.
We The People now have NO REPRESENTATION. Rush can explain it in terms that the non-political-junkie can understand: the UNIPARTY has declared war on the USA and it is time to grind them into dust.
With zerocare about to inflict its worst pain yet on the populace, there will be millions and millions more listening ears anxious for the avenues and plans to put these Nation-destroyers down FOR GOOD.
Got a link?
Just hoping someone knows where this often requested third party actually is. Maybe those of Perot, Anderson, Nader, Wallace could be recycled. Maybe Hillary cold lend her help to get it off the ground. Whatever - someone who advocates this needs to be getting busy.
