Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 21, thin and pale, arrived in court Monday looking like the college student he was before he was accused of bombing the Boston Marathon...
...Judge OToole told prospective jurors that picking a jury could take up to three weeks, with opening statements possibly starting Jan. 26...
...Mr. Tsarnaev has pleaded not guilty to a 30-count indictment against him, including 17 counts that carry the death penalty. If the jury finds him guilty on even one of those counts, it must then decide whether to sentence him to life in prison or to death...
... on Monday, he proceeded as if he expected to cull from an initial pool of 1,200 people the largest number ever summoned for a trial here at least 12 jurors and six alternates who can be fair and impartial...

It’ll be curious how they fill the jury. I think just about everyone in that region has an opinion, and it’s slanted against the bombers.
In my best John Wayne voice, “We’ll get ya a fair trial son, then a real fine hangin’”
I am sure they can come up with some Rolling Stone readers somehow.
I have a grandson the same age as Martin Richard. There is no way I could pass voir dire.
Didn’t read the article but I heard a small part of a discussion about this on the Sirius Politics of the US channel yesterday with a reporter who is covering it.
Nobody knows for sure, but the expectation seems to be that they are going to try the “my brother made me do it” defense. And I think the defense’s main goal will be to save this guy from the death penalty.
At which I hope they fail.
Maybe he will testify that he ran over Tamerlane “Speedbump” Tsarnaev on purpose in an desperate effort to get away.
Going to have a hard time saying that his brother made him drive over his brother and kill him.
This is Boston, Taxachusetts. even if they find him guilty, he will not get the death penalty.
Federal charges, not state charges. Timothy McVeigh.
The federal government has brought Mr. Tsarnaev to trial with unusual speed just 21 months after two pressure-cooker bombs wreaked havoc and carnage at Bostons prestigious marathon, a grueling athletic event and celebratory spring ritual. The tribunal is starting more quickly than 99 of the 119 federal death penalty cases that have gone to trial in the last decade, according to Mr. Tsarnaevs lawyers.
From what I’ve read about the family, they should all be executed, clean out the gene pool. One’s crazier than the next.
Massachusetts does not have the Death Penalty. The reason it is in play is because the charges are Federal. That said, the jury pool is filled with MA residents who trend liberal. I think he will not get sentenced to death.
As Ez pointed out in post 13: That said, the jury pool is filled with MA residents who trend liberal. I think he will not get sentenced to death.
I don't see the people of the Commonwealth putting this guy to death. They are too liberal.
No real conservative would want to stay away from their work for 3+ months. Getting out of serving on this jury would be a piece of cake. Just say what you feel.
I’m still waiting for the execution of Nidal Hasan, the Ft. Hood jihadist.
It won’t happen on Obama’s watch.
It doesn’t matter. It is Boston..... Massachusetts. The NeoEuropeans there will never hold an execution, even for a criminal that interrupted a sports event
3 months away from work is bad but when I was on the docket for federal jury duty (you are on the list for 2 weeks but only go to possibly be seated when they say so), you got $100 day for appearing (plus parking, meals, and lodging if necessary). It may have gone up since then.
It isn’t like the $5 a day you get in local jury duty.
No real conservative would shirk their civic duty.
That being said the last murder trial I sat on I made clear to both sides I was my ships legal officer (collateral duty, non-JAG) when I was in the service.
The judge only gave a certain number of exclusions to each side. I could see the defense guy mulling it over in his head, but he only had a one left and 4 more seats to fill so he put me in. Verdict was pretty cut and dry, only question that came up was on intent.
