I’d say you are being targeted because of your sexual orientation, which is not a violation of Federal law, but it may well violate the employment discrimination laws of your state.
If you were a homosexual, you could use the word “queer”, with its traditional meaning, as you did, or with the slang meaning, and there would be no hearing. Therefore, there is only a hearing because of your orientation, and that means, if you live in a state where sexual orientation is a protected class, they are violating that law.

That’s great advice. Take a lawyer. You’ll end up with a settlement at minimum. No matter what, you’re going to need a new job. Dust off your resume and spiff it up.
You need a lawyer, or some legal representation, because they have no intention of listening to your side. Your employer is taking what they consider the path of least resistance. If you belong to a labor union, that may help.
This is speeding toward ‘wrongful termination’.
Unless you signed some agreement to a “Zero Tolerance” policy of discrimination, which may or may not allow for any mistakes, you can say, I should have first received a verbal or written reprimand and a short period of probation I was not given any opportunity to be educated on company policy and to later implement said policy in a correct fashion. There has been no recorded effort to train you in the manner of behavior they seem to prefer.

OMG. You have offended the hypersensitives. Keep a written record of every single thing that happens with regard to this for your attorney. Consider finding an attorney ASAP if you don’t have one. Do you have job reviews, awards, commendations, kudos to refer to regarding your job history and performance? You’ll need all of it. You probably shouldn’t approach this person on your own anymore.

Well, the thing is, “gays” are not a protected group, under the law. “Sexual orientation”, of any kind, is what is referred to under the relevant laws. If his state has those laws, they prevent the employer from discriminating in favor of, or against, any particular orientation. So he can claim disparate treatment, even as a heterosexual, if they are not punishing homosexuals for using the word “queer” also.
From personal experience I agree. apologizing only provides ammo, giving them the excuse to say offense was intended when it wasn’t.

If the word was used in its original meaning, strange or odd, and not homosexual, there are no grounds for any disciplinary action. It’s akin to blacks being offended by the use of the word niggardly (stingy). Or illegal aliens claiming they’re being accused of being from another planet. PC has the potential of ruining the English language.

Indeed - how they take it is the last meaning for using the word. Sounds like he’s a heterosexualophobe.
People have a right to use the word - in any of it’s many other meanings.
Include a statement stating you used the word in reference to not being ‘queer’ - i.e. ‘strange’ ‘ different’ etc for “working long hours” - And you are not responsible for someone doing a knee-jerk misinterpretation. The only mistake you made was to apologize...instead of making a simple statement that you were using the word, AS YOUR DITTY ILLUSTRATES - in a more popular meaning of the word - per the dictionary meanings. Apologies are due to YOU, all around.
BUT TAKE A LAWYER - or a lawyers letter. That makes them sit up and take notice.
