Another threat from climate change: bad-tasting shrimp
Los Angeles Times ^ | December 22, 2014 | by Michael Hiltzik

Some of the consequences of climate change are obvious -- shrinking polar ice caps, rising sea levels, more damaging floods -- and some are subtle. Among the latter, we can now add bad-tasting seafood.

So concludes a team of researchers led by Sam Dupe of the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, recently published in the Journal of Shellfish Research. They tested shrimp raised for three weeks in seawater of average pH versus shrimp raised in acidic waters, similar to conditions that may prevail as the continued emission of excess carbon dioxide turns the oceans more acidic.

Seafood is an important source of protein for the human population, and likely to become more important. Research into factors that could affect the viability of the seafood industry, including the palatability of the product, shouldn't be lightly dismissed.

Bad tasting shrimp/any other sea food found in the grocer’s case not covered completely with green ice - you can smell them before you see them ... rotting. Or most any frozen farm raised shrimp.

My dad had a shrimp boat for a while.

We sure used to gorge on good Texas shrimp.

They must assume therefore that climate change causes climate change which then produces global warming which then proceeds to cause climate change ... >sigh< it’s never ending.

Carbon dioxide in sea water reacts with calcium and magnesium to form calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate, two relatively insoluble compounds which sink to the floor of the ocean and form part of the ocean floor. Eventually, they become known as limestone, and form a sort of shield over the other ooze on the ocean floor, in turn creating new reservoirs of captured natural gas and crude petroleum.

I do not understand the lack of intellectual honesty of a person who claims to hold advanced degrees, which at some point or another, had to include the hard sciences, including some rather simple chemical reactions.

Real scientific there, Skippy.

Anyway, like I was sayin', shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that's about it.

Bubba knows better than some Eurotrash psuedo- scientist ....

May prevail. Or may not. No irrefutable scientific proof, then the statement is a lie.
