Never in living memory has there been such a heartbreaking cultural calamity as that inflicted earlier this week by Greenpeace on the 2,000-year-old Nazca Lines in Peru. The only exception, perhaps, would be the Taliban’s destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan in 2001.
It is poetic therefore, in a morbid sort of way, that both acts of cultural sacrilege were committed by terrorist organizations. The Taliban, of course, are conventional terrorists whose heinous acts of violence have claimed countless lives across the globe. But Greenpeace, by its actions in Nazca, is just as guilty of terrorism, albeit against a non-human victim . The Oxford dictionary defines terror(ism) as, The unofficial or unauthorized use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims. Greenpeace’s intimidation and desecration of the World Heritage archaeological site in Peru places it squarely in the category of being cultural terrorists.
The cultural carnage began on December 8th, when 20 “activists” from the increasingly radical international “environmentalist” organization put a stake through the heart of one of humanity’s greatest works of art, Peru’s Nazca Lines, by trampling through the desert around them in order to place a banner which they hoped would generate publicity for their organization and their “cause.”
Timed to coincide with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) COP 20 meeting being held in Lima December 1-12, the Greenpeace cultural terrorists from Germany, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Spain, and Austria trespassed onto the sacred archaeological site and left a path that introduced a new line to the iconic hummingbird figure. Sadly, the hummingbird was the only figure that was in pristine condition. That is, until Greenpeace defiled it for all time.
In the words of Luis Jaime Castillo, Peruvian Deputy Culture Minister, “You walk there and the footprint is going to last hundreds or thousands of years,”
Ana Maria Cogorno, President of the Maria Reiche Association (named after the German archaeologist whose groundbreaking research on the Nazca Lines brought them to worldwide attention and fame) said, “The destruction is irreparable.”
The Peruvian government, understandably, is outraged by this blatant disregard for the country’s culture and history. And rightly so. For foreigners to literally trample upon a national treasure for the sake of their own self-aggrandizing agenda is beyond unacceptable – no matter what their perceived moral cause. The incalculable hubris and narcissism shown by these 20 “activists” would be beyond belief were it not for Greenpeace’s track record.
The sad truth is that Greenpeace’s actions, while shocking, are hardly surprising. Over the past few years Greenpeace has steadily become more extreme in both its politics and actions. It has become glaringly apparent that Greenpeace has absolutely no regard for anyone or anything other than itself and its agenda. And this can be seen in its actions all over the world. The cultural heritage of Peru is just the latest victim of a movement that increasingly evokes parallels to “la lucha” (the struggle) of Sendero Luminoso.
Greenpeace has no regard for the property of others. In the United States, eight Greenpeace activists recently plead out on criminal trespass charges relating to another banner hanging stunt in Cincinnati, Ohio. There were originally nine defendants. However, the ninth, a tortured soul who appeared to have joined Greenpeace in an attempt to fill a void in his life after leaving the US Marines and serving tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, committed suicide. The question never asked was whether it was the false and empty promises by Greenpeace that led to a decorated Marine being pushed into committing a criminal act that triggered his PTSD and ultimately claimed his life.
Greenpeace has no regard for the safety of others. In the past 15 months, the Greenpeace rubber dingy navy has clashed with Russian and Spanish naval forces. Both the Arctic and Canary Islands incidents began when Greenpeace “activists” attempted to force their way onboard peaceful civilian vessels, placing everyone in danger and forcing the security services to intervene before the situation escalated beyond control. These actions amount to no less than piracy on the high seas. Someday, a judge somewhere will make these modern-day pirates walk the proverbial plank and send them off to the brig for a few years of reflection.
Greenpeace has no regard for the interests of others. After thorough research, the Indian Intelligence Bureau determined that Greenpeace is a threat to India’s economy and national security. It is clear that Greenpeace cares for no one’s agenda but its own – even when it goes to the extent of harming economic development on behalf of governments and sometimes corporations. Greenpeace’s claim that it does not take money from corporations or governments is no longer believable. But its motivation is always to benefit the Greenpeace agenda.
Greenpeace, as an organization, has become the very definition of self-righteous arrogance. The actions of its operatives have placed innocent lives in danger, resulted in the injury and arrest of Greenpeace activists themselves, and now damaged a national treasure of the Peruvian people. If these radical “activists” are not dealt with firmly now, it is only a matter of time before Greenpeace’s actions will result in someone getting killed.
The nations of the world – Russia, Spain, Australia, United States, France, India, and beyond – are waking up to the truth of what sort of people these Greenpeace “activists” really are. It is time for the Republic of Peru to join them.
In that spirit, the Peruvian government should be encouraged to prosecute Greenpeace’s “Nazca-20″ to the fullest extent of the law.
The Peruvian courts are used to dealing with radical extremists – just ask Abimael Guzman and Lori Berenson. Maybe the “Nazca 20” will get to share a beer and swap war stories with “Presidente Gonzalo” during a sojourn in the Callao prison. One could only hope…
Greenpeace’s senior leadership has already issued an apology for the actions of their field operatives. We expect those apologies to continue, and we accept them for the shallow words that they are.
But this isn’t about being sorry. Lady Macbeth was sorry too. She was sorry she got caught, not sorry for what she did. And so it is with Greenpeace.
As more and more people walk away from the many forms of collectivism in the world the Left just gets nuttier and nuttier.

One would think that a synthetic could be made that would be comparable. Sam Melomo pushes lube guard and brings up whale oil.
Put them in the middle of the high Peruvian plain, in the southern summer, with nothing but a can of oil.
They did, it just took a while. That was in 86.
In the interim there were some problems, but most of that iron has long since been crushed, melted, and come back as Chinese stuff.
FWIW I've had good luck with Lubegard "red" for fixing the TCC chatter on my Caddy. It's definitely beyond "snake oil" LOL

They would have a fine time explaining their stunt to the inmates of that iconic jail in Lima.
I have some lubeguard products around and plan to try them in the old Willys jeep when I can be left alone to fool with it.
