A 10-year-old boy who's been in an adult jail since authorities say he fatally beat a 90-year-old woman two months ago is scared, lonely and misses his mother, his public defender said.
The boy, one of the youngest ever to face an adult homicide charge in Pennsylvania, met with family through a glass partition when he was first brought to the county lockup in rural northeastern Pennsylvania. More recently, he was permitted to have physical contact with them, according to the attorney, Scott Bennett.
"So his mom can give him a hug," he said this week.
The beating occurred Oct. 11 at the home of the boy's grandfather, who had been caring for the victim, Helen Novak. The boy became angered when he went into Novak's home to ask her a question and she yelled at him, according to the boy's mother, who brought him to a state police barracks later that day.
According to the mother, the boy told her that "he got mad, lost his temper and grabbed a cane and put it around Novak's throat," police said. The boy told a trooper he punched her several times in the throat and stomach while holding her down on the bed, authorities have said.

"An attorney who initially represented the boy had petitioned to have him released into the custody of his father or moved to a juvenile detention facility. But he withdrew his request, saying the family wasn't comfortable having him placed in their care, and the closest youth facility was 80 miles away."
So. His own family doesn't want him around either.

The kid probably is a psycho but he should be in a secure adolescent or mental facility not adult jail.
He certainly doesn't need to see freedom anytime soon, but I think he really deserves to be in a secure hospital getting treatment.
Nobody is being served well with a 10 year old in adult prison.

All murderers are mentally disturbed. They murder people and think it’s fine.
Too many people think someone outside typical parameters does something horrible, it must be because they are mentally disturbed. Some people are just. I knew 10 year olds that were BAD people at 10 years old. They remained bad people throughout high school and into adulthood. They WERE BAD PEOPLE.
WOMEN cna be BAD PEOPLE. CHILDREN can be BAD PEOPLE.
There are a lot of OLD PEOPLE that are BAD PEOPLE. They used to be younger and BAD. They got old and now they’re OLD BAD people.

"This is not in any way to diminish the crime he is charged with, which is the most serious crime, but we don't treat children in this country this way."
And children don't generally treat their adult family members that way either do they!
If they want to unplug someone, this would be a good person to start with. She's obviously brain dead...
I find it strange and alarming that authorities would allow this boy to walk free back into his parent’s custody if they so chose to do it. Never mind his family and the public being placed at grave danger. That shouldn’t even be an option, as easily as this child can be set off. The parents missed a lot of signals in the past, but have enough sense to now keep him out of the family home. He’s too sick, and probably always will be for an unsupervised family setting.
Bad children are especially scary bad people. I don’t care where this kid is as long as he is securely contained and will never mingle with the general public again.

He’s a 10-yr-old mad dog. Put him in a cage and poke him with a stick. If he snarls, well... what do you do with a snarling 10-yr-old mad dog?
Like a rabid dog, he should just be put down.
It is strange. And even stranger is how the family said “No Thanks” to the idea of him coming back home.
They probably know that GrandPa (or whoever) will be next.
Execute him. He won’t miss anyone then. Too bad the SCOTUS declared it unconstitutional to execute little brats who should get what they deserve.

Know the feeling. However, ten year old’s were not automatically executed even under the old Common Law.” They would be executed only if it could be shown they knew what they were doing at the time of the killing. The age range where that rule applied was seven to fourteen.
