If the question is “Are you smart enough to get elected POTUS, that can only be answered by time.But if the question is, are you a member of Mensa, the answer is irrelevant because although there are many Mensa members, and others who would qualify but haven’t joined, as far as I know none of them has ever become president. Certainly none of them have been excellent presidents. Herbert Hoover, for instance, was quite intelligent but became a byword for ineptness as president. And while Jimmy Carter’s intelligence was unquestioned, the result of his policies were no better overall than Hoover’s.
Most presidents, even great ones, have only one legacy that you could put on their headstone. Ronald Reagan checked the energy crisis, whipped inflation, got the country going again, and transcended communism. And he did all that with a hostile majority party in control of the House. I can only aspire to being adroit enough to have my intelligence compared with the man who was famously called an “amiable dunce.”
His response makes me wonder. He needed to swat that down with the disdain it deserved. Wonder if they’ll ask Ted Cruz that question.
