House Democrats blocked legislation on Thursday that would have permanently extended three tax credits for charitable giving, ending an effort to give nonprofits a last-minute victory.
The bill got a strong majority in the House, with 275 members voting for it, including 47 Democrats. But the measure fell eight votes short of the two-thirds majority it needed to pass, with 149 Democrats voting against it after House Democratic leaders whipped against it and President Obama threatened a veto.
The vote ends a last-ditch effort by the nonprofit sector to get three of its priorities into law for good, after a broader deal that would have accomplished that fell apart last month. The measure was pushed by Congresss top tax writers, House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-Mich.) and Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), but would have faced a difficult path in the Senate even if it had cleared the House.

why ?
What constitutional or illegal transgression was spared the American people by the ever watchful for our well being democrats ? (spit)
Am I missing something?
Why did this need 2/3rds?
I just pointed that out. Democrats want to be the gatekeepers of all charity given out in this country. They love to give away other people's money ...
Rules - no amendments to the bill without 2/3's approval
Democrats want people to rely on the feral government for help.
This is a TERRIBLE bill.
The whole thing needs to be defeated.
Those sneaky charities are always trying to lure voters off the democrat plantation with their no-strings-attached handouts.

I’ll take an 80% solution at this point ...
A 2/3rds vote would be veto proof.
Next year, you’re going to see twelve separate funding bills go to Obama for signature. That Couldn’t happen this year because Reid blocked it ...

In scuttling the bill, Democrats argued that the bills $11 billion cost should be offset, especially after Republicans opposed permanently extending tax incentives for working families.
That term "... extending tax incentives for working families." is, I believe, referring to not including Obama's 'amnestied' (un/non-documented) in the EITC.
The view is that if you are tax exempt, it is the same as a positive subsidy.
I have seen many on FR say the same thing.
Beware of the idea of federal tax credits since Congress can legally tax only for what it needs to perform its constitutional duties, most of those duties listed in Sectian 8 of Article I. Tax credits make it sound like youre getting a tax break from the federal government when youre actually still paying for constitutionally indefensible federal government services.
Is that true? I heard McConnell gassing about that with Greta the other night but I thought this omnibus bill wipes out our options until September 2015.
Or are you talking about that, Sept. 2015, as next year?
Alternatively if they kill this crime-nibus bill, we can start the separate funding even early this year, right?
Thanks in advance for any insight.
There isn't time to rehash the whole FY15 budget (we're 3 months into it already).
I'm optimistic FY16 will be funded thru 12 separate bills, and the Democrats will become known as the party of 'NO'...
How did we end up with one person deciding things of this nature?
And then we have dems accusing republicans of blocking legislation and causing government shutdowns when it is actually them.
In fact the other day Obama himself said he has no problem with him HIMSELF shutting down the government if the republicans won't “compromise”
LOL, that's all they have been doing.
The dems REFUSE to compromise, compromise to them is republican capitulation to their tantrumatic demands.
If the gov shuts down, the scardy cat republicans need to state over and over again that it is the dems and the “resident” who cause it.
Or suck it up and say yeah, we shut down the out of control spending. The ball's in the dems court.
Compromise or shut the freep up.
Gotcha.
The only problem I see with that is that McConnell and Boehner are always promising to pay next Tuesday for their hamburger today.
And next September is a lot of Tuesdays away.
But here’s hopin’. And thanks again.
On Rush just now it’s reported that the House vote on the omnibus bill has been delayed.
