TNR veterans protest Hughes' 'destruction' (The New Republic)
Politico ^ | 5 Dec 2014 | DYLAN BYERS

Three former editors of The New Republic -- Hendrik Hertzberg, Peter Beinart and Andrew Sullivan -- have joined more than a dozen of their fellow TNR veterans in protesting the "destruction" of the magazine at the hands of owner Chris Hughes.

"As former editors and writers for The New Republic, we write to express our dismay and sorrow at its destruction in all but name," the editors and their former colleagues wrote in a statement, released Friday evening.

"From its founding in 1914, The New Republic has been the flagship and forum of American liberalism. Its reporting and commentary on politics, society, and arts and letters have nurtured a broad liberal spirit in our national life," the statement continues. "The magazine’s present owner and managers claim they are giving it new relevance while remaining true to its century-old mission. Instead, they seem determined to strip it of the intellectual, literary, and political commitments that have been its essence and meaning. Their pronouncements suggest that they hold those commitments in contempt."

Let me guess. The new owner wants accountability.

Odd that this should be in Politico. At least on FReeper has commented that while TNR has moved to the Right, Politico seems to have moved hard Left.

There were a few years in the 80s when the New Republic was a pretty good paper. Barnes, Kondracke, Wieseltier Kinsley. I subscribed and got a lot out of it. There was not much good about it as soon as Andrew Sullivan took over and literally every article was about homosexuality. It wasn’t even that I disagreed so much as that we were supposed to think that was the only issue in the country, which was not the case.

I suspect that the new owners may know what they are doing, and will be able to keep the mission of the magazine intact.

Maybe The New Republic will become a genuine journal rather than another propaganda outlet for the many leftists.

Those who resigned can find jobs at the New York Times or Washington Post. But, maybe not.

Former Publisher Marty Peretz was a staunch Israel supporter and TNR saw no Israeli bashing under him.

Liberals want every company and institution to operate like the public school system, where no one can be fired no matter how poorly they perform.

Where are the three former editors of The New Republic — Hendrik Hertzberg, Peter Beinart and Andrew Sullivan? You never hear from them. If they were good writers they would have widely circulated columns by now and we’d be laughing at their crazy liberal gems of wisdom every day.

As for The New Republic writers who just resigned en masse, how can the New York Times, Washington Post, or any other liberal media outlet afford to hire them when every month they lay off more and more of their own employees because they can’t afford to keep paying them?

The new owner, Hughes, a 31-year-old Facebook co-founder who bought the magazine in 2012, intends to rebrand the venerable, century-old publication as a “digital media company.”

Q: What’s a “digital media company”.

A: According to a Google search, The top three are really no surprises: #1 is Google, followed by Yahoo (whose sites get a staggering 630 million unique visitors a month!) and Apple. Facebook and BrightHouse are also on the list. Maybe FreeRepublic is a DMC too.

No wonder all these old libs bailed out. Good luck finding future employment. And good luck Mr. Hughes with your new venture into a massive competitive field.

“From its founding in 1914, The New Republic has been the flagship and forum of American liberalism”

Using the definition of liberalism in 1914 or 2014? Just wondering, since they are completely opposite.

“political commitments” = “political hijacking”.

TNR used to be somewhat balanced until the rats who are now jumping ship took over.
