Disability Rolls Balloon

When a veteran academic finds something notable in a Republican president’s administration, it’s generally the expansion of a federal government program.

At the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), on Tuesday, Michael Wiseman, an economist at George Washington University (GWU), called Supplemental Security Income (SSI) for the disabled, the “big achievement of the Nixon years.” The program dates from 1974.

Currently, millions of adults and children are on the program, and millions more are likely to be. “Since 1996, the real value of TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, as the Clinton Administration and the Republican Congress renamed welfare) has been declining,” Wiseman noted, “while SSI benefits increased.”

“Incentives exist for states to move children to SSI.”

Further, according to Wiseman, of the 1.2 million children on SSI, 65 percent qualify on mental issues. In fact, 10 percent of the kids on SSI are autistic, Jeffrey Hemmeter of the Social Security Administration, which administers the program, says.

“They can keep getting payments after age 18 if they are in a program that will lead to work,” Hemmeter, who spoke at the same AEI conference, said.

“Ten years out, 14 percent of those who received benefits as children successfully reapplied,” Hemmeter added. For those off the program, the future is a coin flip.

“Those on SSI at ages 18-24 are more likely to be employed but they are also more likely to be arrested or incarcerated,” Hemmeter said.

As well, Pamela Loprest of the Urban Institute observed that the undocumented parents of eligible children can apply on behalf of their offspring.

***The tort lawyers have jumped on this big time***

How true! My Sister-in-law works for a social services group and tells me she sees whole families with 30 year old children who have never worked a day in their life because the whole family is “bi-polar”.

She sees these scams all the time and can do nothing about it.

We have stumbled upon one of the chief rationales for unlimited illegal immigration.

The number of drug-raddled 30 year-old Americans and their various offspring on SSI with such life-threatening illnesses as "Bi-Polar Disorder," "Anger Management Issues, "Carpal Tunnel Syndrome," "Agoraphobia," "Bad Back," "Diabetes," "Morbid Obesity," "Infected Tattoos," etc. etc. is truly staggering.

They are unwilling and by now actually unable, to work at anything that might, or might not be available. Take that lovely Ferguson Crowd. (Please.) If one were to add up the various benefits from the various programs that support their nutrition, clothing, shelter, and health care, the cost would far surpass the dollar amount of damage that they did.

In the few months before they themselves apply for and receive similar benefits, illegal aliens pick up a bit of the slack for these government-supported slackers. Then of course, more illegals are needed.

Also Team Obama has great incentive to place their base on SSI because it masks the true unemployment numbers. If unemployment in real terms is below 12%, I will personally climb a coconut tree and make The Gay Mombasa MF and his BF a piña colada.

I have been saying that anyone collecting SSI because of a bipolar diagnosis should have to surrender their drivers license. Aren’t we always told that driving is a privilege not a right? If you are so messed up that you can’t work, we don’t want you behind the wheel of a vehicle. How many would want that check if they had to give up their wheels? And if you get caught driving the checks stop immediately.

How the so-called “poverty” rate in the US is calculated is a bad joke.

Welfare, SSI, Section 8 subsidized housing, EBT cards etc. etc. are not counted as income.

So some welfare queen with 8 kids could be making out like a bandit receiving say, 60K a year in welfare benefits and still be considered one of those living in “poverty”.

The article confuses SSD - Social Security Disability with Supplemental Security Income.

The former is a program for work-disabled Americans. Its very difficult to enroll in it. On the other hand, the latter which is an income assistance program for low income Americans, is pretty easy to sign up for if you meet the requirements.
