Hungary's Orbán admits he had "uneasy" moments with Putin

Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has given an interview to Germany newspaper Handelsblatt. According to an abridged version of the interview available online, the PM talked about Ukraine, saying that Hungary needs a neighbour that separates it from Russia. Kiev, however, cannot yet stand on its own feet.

That is why a sovereign Ukraine is needed

Orbán underlined that it is Hungary’s interest to always have something between itself and Russia and this something could be a sovereign Ukraine. "The country [Hungary] had shared a border with the Soviet Union before and it took a long time before it could rid of it. We would not like [to have] that again," he explained.

This was not the first time Orbán has made that statement over the last few days. On Sunday, he told journalists in Vilnius that Hungary needs to rely on its historical experience that it once had shared a border with the Soviet Union and "we were not happy about it."

Our interest is to maintain the sovereignty of Ukraine, that it is strong enough, can stand on its own feet, that it is able to operate its own economy and defend its borders, Orbán said.

"We need a neighbour like that and for this we will provide every support on a national basis and also as member of NATO," he added.

Ukraine not yet on its feet

Orbán said it is Hungary’s interest to have Ukraine as member of the European Union therefore the country needs to become stable both politically and economically and it must be able to control its borders.

He noted that in his view Ukraine still cannot stand on its own feet therefore it needs to be clarified who will provide the EUR 25 bn annually which is needed to maintain the stable operation of the country.

I read on RT that the opposite is true: Russia needs a buffer between it and Hungary.

Then why does Orban want a chunk of Ukraine for Hungary?

Maybe Orban really just wants autonomy for ethnic Hungarians in Ukraine, like he said.

What do you think about reports that Hungary sold T-72 tanks to Ukraine just a few months ago?

“Never believe anything until it’s been official denied.”
