Ice is already starting to develop on Michigan's Great Lakes. This is the earliest ice on some of the Great Lakes in at least 40 years.
According to the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory, on November 20, 2014, three of Michigan's Great Lakes had ice starting to form. Lake Superior and Lake Michigan were one-half percent ice covered, while Lake Huron had one percent ice. Lake Erie was not reporting any ice as of Nov. 20, 2014.
Decent early season ice coverage records date back to 1973. Last Friday was the earliest date that all three Great Lakes already had ice since the better reporting of early season ice began.
Lake Superior actually had ice forming on November 15th of this year. That is the earliest ice on Lake Superior in the good data set.

The more ice on the lakes the less lake affect snow.
Gotta love that "Globull Warming". HA!!!
Why haven’t “they” been out explaining how this is global warming? Could it be they are such true believers that they began believing their own propaganda and didn’t expect to have something contrary to their religion happen?
“Great Lakes Ice Cover Developing; Earliest In Over 40 years. Gotta love that “Globull Warming”. HA!!!”
Geez, don’t you get it? Global Warming causes the cold. How many times does this need to be said?
This should not come as a surprise. Last winter was so cold and this summer so cool that the water did not warm up to its usual temps for this time of the year. This has nothing to do with the global warming nonsense and everything to do with last winter and summer.
Right, and that is a good thing for those of us in Northeast Ohio. Lake-effect snow is also a heavy, wet snow that can be a real pain to clear.
The real point is....It’s happened before and it will happen again in the years ahead....as sure as the sun rises and sets.
Al Gore....please pick up the white courtesy phone.
The last of the ice on Superior didn’t melt till June 11....
I was out walking our dog yesterday morning (West Texas) and saw 4 huge flocks of geese followed by several more smaller flocks heading south. I’ve not seen flocks this large before. It was an awesome sight. But have to say, I’m not outside watching all the time so I can’t say for sure this hasn’t happened in previous years.
Warm globally, cool locally! LOL!
Bookmark my post. If the Lakes freeze over early there won’t be as much snow for the winter. The GWists will then cite this as proof positive that there is global warming.
It’s 68 degrees in NYC, with a snow storm coming in tomorrow. Damn you man and your carbon!!
Ice on Lake Superior in July

But it’s summer! Bizarre scenes as ICEBERGS are spotted still floating in Lake Superior in the middle of June
10JUN2014
Icebergs can still be seen floating in Lake Superior near Madeline Island, off the shore of Wisconsin
The Great Lakes were declared ice free on June 7 following a record-breaking seven months of ice coverage
They usually thaw by May
Lake Superior was found to be the most affected by the harsh winter and was found to be 63.5 percent ice covered on April 20
In March the Great Lakes were 92.5 percent frozen

Correct. Most people do not know that Lake Erie typically will freeze over every year. Then the lake effect snow like last week stops. Lake Erie is on average only 30’ deep. That is why it warms up so much in the summer and can create terrible lake effect storms in the early part of the winter.
Its total cubic gallons of water was also why it got so polluted in the 1960s as opposed to the other great lakes that hold much more volume. That and the fact it was down river from Detroit.
The fact that the lakes other than Erie typically do not completely freeze over results in places like the upper peninsula of Michigan and Syracuse, NY getting lake effect all winter long. I think the snowiest place in the eastern US is the Tug Hill plateau. It is north of Syracuse and south of Watertown, NY. It is directly east(the prevailing wind direction) of Lake Ontario. If you look on a map, it is the area west of the Adirondack Park where there is virtually nothing. I had a college buddy that grew up there.
