MEXICO CITY – Clashes broke out between protesters and police officers on Thursday night, as tens of thousands gathered in front of Mexico City’s National Palace in support of families and friends of the 43 students abducted by police in Iguala, in the state of Guerrero on Sept. 26.

On a day normally marked by reverent remembrances of the Mexican Revolution of 1910, various marches led by parents and families of the missing students started at different points of the city around 4 p.m. and made their way toward the Zócalo, the city’s central square.

As thousands converged on the Zócalo, the demonstration remained mostly peaceful, but one group of protesters clashed with police when they attempted to block off the city’s international airport.

The story of the 43 missing students is consuming Mexico. Tied in with the revelations of Pena Nieto's corruption, it really has the potential to bring down his Presidency, or at least discredit the PRI once and for all.

I doubt it. Corruption and murder are a way of life in all of Central America. Plus most of the people have no way to resist the national police force that props up the reime.

Aww. That’s a real shame.
Forty three communist agitators died after hijacking trucks and busses.

I have huge problems with a lot of things that the Mexican government does.

I save my ire for cases where there is an innocent victim somewhere in the mix though. There aren’t any here and given the circumstances I have zero problem with skipping several decades of death row.

I agree, this reminds everyone of the Tlatelolco Massacre and it isn’t going away so easily. Combined with Nieto’s personal scandals which are starting to pile up rapidly, it may bring down the PRI, once and for all. Good riddance at last, I say.

the Mexican people will only regain control of their country when they rid it of the drug cartels....all military and local forces should be concentrated on that single isue.

I was thinking about this today.

I'm always told that most Mexican legal and illegal immigrants are mostly ‘conservative’ (pro-family, and religious, etc)

If so, why is their government what it is?

Getting rid of communists is always good too.
And since the not so sadly departed were communist thugs, this whole thing is a plus.

That’s oversimplifying; military/police and cartels aren’t mutually exclusive. Mexico is a corrupt country; they would have to follow Colombia’s lead in dealing with their cartels (which in Colombia were aligned with communists).

Same “students.”

This is like those “unarmed teenagers” Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown.

"The Mexican people will only regain control of their country..."

Except for a few brief and localized exceptions, the Mexican people have never had control of their country, or even come close to it.
