No, SpirituTuo. “Pascendi” did not just point out the “problems with Modernism.” It declares that Modernism is a HERESY! In case you have forgotten, the basic premise of Modernism is: “That may be true for you, but it isn’t for me.” (We hear that everywhere today!) It denies that there is an Objective Reality (God), that Truth is unchanging, and that God has given Commandments that cannot be broken. People cannot just decide on their own what is True and what is not. When Pope Francis said, “Who am I to judge?” he did not confirm that God has spoken and that what He has said cannot be changed. No matter how you spin it, Pope Francis has not spoken definitively for the Truth. As piusv pointed out to me on another thread, Pope Pius XI included, as a heretic, anyone who “supports” Modernism (which I did not know). “Supporting” means not actively speaking against it. I don’t see Pope Francis actively speaking against Modernism. On the contrary, he says and does many things that seem to confirm that he believes Truth is “flexible.” Ever since Pope Paul VI decided to do away with the “Oath Against Modernism,” it has infected the Church from top to bottom and that includes the current Pope.
Remember the words of Our Lord: “By their fruits you shall know them.”
Also remember one of the axioms of Philosophy: “It is impossible to believe simultaneously two contradictory propositions.”
I think that is a valid point, and one made by Cardinal Burke.
I think people are confusing opinion with fact. If one reads the entire interview on the plane, where this phrase, and other topics were discussed, he was very clear about the Church’s teaching, including referring to the Catechism.
Without a doubt, Modernism is an heresy. However, to accuse the Pope of heresy is pretty bold, and in my opinion, rash.
Whether others are Modernists, that is likely the case, the law of large numbers covers that. However, I think it is a logical leap to suggest the Pope is an heretic.
The problem, like you stated so aptly here, is that it has infected the entire Church since just before Vatican II and onward. Most Catholics don't even realize that they themselves think and act like a Modernist (and therefore support it).
Yes, I knew you meant Pope Pius XI. He, like all the previous popes, built on what his predecessor had said.
