Trees Really Are 'Pleasant to the Sight'

by Brian Thomas, M.S. *

Genesis 2:9 records one of the Lord's original intentions for creating trees, saying, "Out of the ground the LORD God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil." A new study has quantified just how pleasant to the sight trees can be, inadvertently confirming the truthfulness of this ancient biblical passage.

Professor William Sullivan and lecturer Bin Jiang of the University of Illinois' department of landscape architecture measured stress levels in participants who watched six-minute-long 3D panoramic videos of neighborhoods. The amount of tree canopy coverage in the various neighborhoods ranged from 2 to 62 percent.1

Please don’t disappoint me and tell me that anything less than $650,000 was spent on the study!

takes time. Most new developments have a tree in the front yard. Need about 15-20 years to mature

...when only a quarter or less of the neighborhood canopies had trees.

What did these 'canopies' contain if not trees?

I like trees; it’s too bad that disease has taken a toll on their “diversity”.

If there were no trees, I don’t think that human civilization would have developed. Not enough caves, and rock and stone are very hard to work with.

So according to this article, the bible says trees are nice. And people like a neighborhood with nice trees. Therefore, evolution is a crock. Oooookay.

You know, sometimes these ICR articles are entertaining or mildly informative. But this one is just silly.

Great line...We live about 100 yards from the ocean and the cabin in front of our home had a huge grove of cedar trees behind it, completely obscuring our view of the ocean. The neighbors were very nice and allowed us to cut many of them down (at our considerable cost) and we have a 3 story house with decks on every level overlooking the ocean. We used the trees as firewood for a fireplace and woodstove for 3 winters. Every other neighbor hated us.

God loves you.

He created trees to calm your nerves.

Genesis is true.

Please have a nice day. I think a small truth, about God loving beauty, is not silly.

I wrote my tagline specifically for Rush Limbaugh,

because I’ve never heard him give a true definition of liberalism.

"Therefore, evolution is a crock"

Trees themselves are a product of evolution. At one time there were no trees on the earth. It was only after the plant world developed lignin which was strong and flexible that larger plants like trees evolved

I once read an article on woods, old growth forests and the S.A. jungles. All the oxygen they produce is a zero sum gain due to the fact that the amount of oxygen they produce is consumed by the decaying deadwood and plants on the forest and jungle floor..................

The excess oxygen needed for life on the plant comes mostly from the oceans, lakes and landscaped lawns and trees.

Trees are deeply rooted in our psychic. They were there surrounding us from the beginning. God put us in a most pleasant and healthful place, a garden with many trees.

According to this study when trees died so did people.

I haven't any problem with it's conclusion, as I instinctively know that trees minister to me on a very deep and profound level. You shouldn't have to be considered a “liberal tree hugger” because you have great appreciation of God's wonderfully and magnificately created nature.

RESULTS:

There was an increase in mortality related to cardiovascular and lower-respiratory-tract illness in counties infested with the emerald ash borer. The magnitude of this effect was greater as infestation progressed and in counties with above-average median household income. Across the 15 states in the study area, the borer was associated with an additional 6113 deaths related to illness of the lower respiratory system, and 15,080 cardiovascular-related deaths.

CONCLUSIONS:

Results suggest that loss of trees to the emerald ash borer increased mortality related to cardiovascular and lower-respiratory-tract illness. This finding adds to the growing evidence that the natural environment provides major public health benefits.
