Patient Faces Bankruptcy After Ambulance Takes Her To Out-Of-Network Hospital
Consumerist ^ | November 12, 2014

Most of us know that it could cost us everything we own if we go to a hospital that isn’t covered by our insurance plan. But what if you’re unconscious and have no say in the matter? That’s the case for a Wisconsin woman who owes $50,000 to a hospital that claims she should just pay up and be happy she’s still alive.

The woman tells WISC-TV [via Reddit] that in Sept. 2013 she went into cardiac arrest and was taken by ambulance to a hospital that was out of her insurance network instead of the one — only a few blocks farther away — that accepts her Anthem Blue Cross coverage

The Dallas Fire Department EMTs are out of network for Blue Cross. Call 911 and get sticker shock.

She should be happy to hand over the $56k. After all that is what funds the illegals and other derilicts hospitals are forced to treat who pay nothing.

She should tell the hospital and its doctors to take her insurance company’s payment in full for services rendered or she will file for bankruptcy and they will never see a dime.

That should shut them up.

Just the Catholic nuns doing their charitable good works of extending their vow of poverty to an unsuspecting person.

Did she sign any contract or agreement when she became conscious? If she did not, the hospital had no valid contract to treat her, so probably would have difficulty suing her.

ObamaCare makes these “network” things so small and restrictive its crazy. The GOPe, if it cannot abolish it outright, needs to cut this to pieces.

Lets see, the area the hospitals are in, having a heart attack at 29 probably indicates someone who is poor; working with an attorney from an advocacy group who mentions the lady did the right thing by getting health insurance, etc
I may be wrong bottom line we will see more of this and everyone who still claims this is a good law will find out it is not!

I don't see how the hospital formed a contract that she would pay them when she was unconscious and incapable of agreeing to anything.

And, it is very interesting that her insurance company paid the hospital everything it would have had it been in their network. So, one price for insurance companies but another for people?

“You think this doesn’t happen to Republicans?”

Yes, this whole line of thinking has been most annoying here.

Like Obamacare is only affecting Obama supporters.

Hey, if that were the case maybe we’d say too bad, but of course it’s not. And quite frankly those people were lied to also. They too were told: if you like your plan you can keep it, if you like your doctor you can keep him/her. We all knew Obama was a lying you-know-what, but it’s hard to expect the American public to EXPECT that their president is lying to their faces.

But I’m not even sure this particular case has anything to do with Obamacare.

The medical industry is a huge racket. Almost every time what the insurance pays is different than what you would without insurance. IE, you get SCREWED

That's nothing new, and can't be attributed to Obamacare.

Go compare what the fedgov (aka Medicare) pays compared to "people".

She ought to count her blessings we don't have National Health Care ... yet.

She probably would have never come out of the coma or died of the heart attack waiting on a gurney in the hallway of the ER for hours while those in line got treated first and the union thugs took their scheduled breaks.

On the other hand, it would have been "free", so there is always a silver lining, no?

This has nothing to do with Obamacare. It could well have happened before Obamacare ever came along. I don’t blame her one bit.
