Can Liberals Talk About Standard-of-Living Stagnation Without Sounding All Socialist?
Slate ^ | November 10, 2014 | Ben Mathis-Lilley

Much of the discussion of last Tuesday's election results has addressed voters' ongoing dissatisfaction with what, by the numbers, is an improving economy. Commenters like Slate's William Saletan noted that Republicans won by using liberal-sounding economic rhetoric to play on income-stagnation angst. President Obama talked about the issue in a press conference, citing the dearth of high-wage jobs amidst the recovery. Today Josh Marshall of the progressive news and commentary site Talking Points Memo and Derek Thompson of the Atlantic poke deeper into the issue. They really poke the heck out of the issue, I tell you!

Marshall's piece is in part about political messaging. He argues, as others have, that "income inequality" is not a compelling phrase in an aspirationally capitalist country that does not particularly loathe rich people simply because they are rich. He says that while it's true that the wealthy aren't suffering from stagnating incomes and standards of living the way everyone else is, there's no advantage to be gained by pointing that out. To paraphrase, he believes that Democrats would be best advised to talk directly to voters whose quality of life has flattened out—the 99 percent—without acknowledging that the 1 percent exists.

But the bigger problem, he argues, is that the Democrats' policy agenda, aside from proposing minimum wage increases, isn't particularly built to help the 99 percent.

They are SOCIALIST! They think they just need to get their "messaging" (propaganda for us, the "stupid electorate").

I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY they DON'T SEE IT.....

It's not that we must raise the minimum wage but rather we MUST DROP taxes on BUSINESS and bring them back.

The writer quotes an article from the Atlantic, that says the service industry doesn't pay like the nice manufacturing jobs that are overseas. So the conclusion - bring on the green jobs and increase the minimum wage for the service industry jobs (ie. SEIU).

My head explodes with LIBERAL "thought."

Highest corporate tax rate in the developed world. There are breaks doled out by Congress but that is a very bad thing as it distorts the market. Also we have the highest effective capital gains taxes in the world.

...... Republicans won by using liberal-sounding economic rhetoric to play on income-stagnation angst

So, Republicans won because they stole the Democrats' schtick? Is that it? Democrats invented that rhetoric, and now they are ticked off because somebody was better at it than them?

Now they could talk about ending the “War on Coal”, which is killing them as a party by turning W. Virgina from Solid Blue to Solid Red, likely turning Kentucky from pink to also Solid Red, and possibly turning Virginia from purple to pink. They could also talk Keystone, toning down the EPA, creating incentives for people to work, rather than collect welfare, securing the border and sending home Illegals that are here.

...they could, but they will not.

And the people know that the stats are phony, particularly on Unemployment, when the REAL STATISTIC, the one that grew tremendously under Clinton and most of the time under Bush-43 is the NUMBER OF JOBS, as that is a hard statistic, not subjective like the unemployment rate.

The more cheap illegal immigrants we allow into America the lower wages will remain. There is not enough job growth and there is more than enough unskilled labor available. It’s all obvious. Liberalism is the cause of this, and, as you point out, the Fabian Socialists don’t have a messaging problem. They have policy problems.

Yes. The Left is trying to hold on to the last of their base - those whose minds they have crippled and lives they’ve destroyed through dependency, and the ignorant they’re nurturing now to feed down the same dead-end dependency tunnel: Sign ahead: Democratic Party.

Sadly, some years ago I learned that more black Americans worked for the US Postal Service than owned their own business. Under those circumstances, the “state as the solution” thinking is perpetuated.

It’s hard not to sound Marxist when you are a Marxist. Still trying to hide their identity behind slogans.

I propose a three prong approach as phase one to wipe out leftism in the US. First part is to get back out into the communities and bring back social conservatism. Keep it out of the media and keep it out of Washington. Do it quietly but with resolve.

Second part of phase one is to continue busting any unions who deal with state government. Just like Scott Walker did. Continue on that path. Go “right to work” wherever possible. By doing this you take money out of the hands of the leftists. Reagan bankrupted the Soviets by forcing them to spend or back down.

Final part is back to the communities. Go after the school boards. Win those local elections and purge the lefties. Bring back peanut butter sandwiches, dodge ball and Christmas pageants. The lefty families that make a stink about it, turn them into pariahs in the community.

We have to go back to square one and take our children back from the machine. That’s the only way we take back our country.

Like it or not, this next election is going to be fought on the battlefield of economic populism.

It’s a pattern with liberals to try and change the language for the same failed policies in hopes of tricking people who aren’t paying attention. It’s the “how can we fool them next” game.

Is High Part-Time Employment the New Normal?
11/13/2014 9:29AM
The U.S. unemployment rate has fallen sharply over the past year, but this hides the fact that many part-time workers can’t find full-time work. WSJ’s Nick Timiraos reports.

The 29ers!

(in bizarro fashion, Obamacare has actually improved the employment stats as companies demote workers to part time and hire more part timers to fill the gap)
