Ku Klux Klan 'Rebranded': Group Diversifying to Include Jews, Blacks and Gays

I grew up in the rural South and the Klan had little to no affect on anyone in the Alabama Mountains I lived in. In fact, most people I knew made fun of the Klan. (I am almost 50 now.) It was the older generation who had more interactions and positive feelings toward the Klan. You would hear stories of deadbeat drunks who beat their wife and kids, getting a midnight visit from the Klan. After the pillow party, it was amazing how this drunk would all of a sudden stop drinking and become a respectable member of society. I also heard stories of Cherokee Indians who were members of the Klan. I believe these stores were true. However, some of the older generation would leave out the evil things the Klan did. The good thing is that most in the South look down on the Klan. I believe this can be proven from the fact that the South is now firmly behind the GOP - a.k.a. the party of Lincoln.

I learn something new every day. My impression was that the Klan was overwhelmingly a Southern phenomenon. I didn’t even know that the Klan had much influence in the Midwest.

There was a big Klan presence all over the country at that time. Here's a photo of Klansmen in Anaheim, CA 1924:



Stephenson was a power mad psychopath and his downfall discredited the KKK so badly that pretty much only the old stereotype of the lynching Southern racist remained after that, although there were remnants of Klan activity in the Midwest, including lynching in Indiana in 1930.
