A potato genetically engineered to reduce the amounts of a potentially harmful ingredient in French fries and potato chips has been approved for commercial planting, the Department of Agriculture announced on Friday.
The potatos DNA has been altered so that less of a chemical called acrylamide, which is suspected of causing cancer in people, is produced when the potato is fried.
The new potato also resists bruising, a characteristic long sought by potato growers and processors for financial reasons. Potatoes bruised during harvesting, shipping or storage can lose value or become unusable.

..omygosh, I can see it now—The Attack of the Killer Potatoes...
Truthfully, I don’t think it matters.
Potatoes, in and of themselves, aren’t particularly healthy, but they aren’t a problem in moderation, for those whose insulin response isn’t messed up. (Of course, after 40 years of government dietary recommendations, that’s less than half of the population.)
But nothing, no matter how healthy it is, or how toxic it is, is going to be healthy after being deep fried in rancid vegetable oils. (And all vegetable oils are rancid before they go in the bottle. Of course, they run the oils through a deodorizing step, during processing, so you can’t smell the rancidity, but just because it doesn’t smell bad doesn’t mean it’s healthy.)
Don't even think about telling me I oughtta give up my fried taters. I'm 69 years old and they haven't kilt me yet.
LOL! Roger that. Since the world wide death rate remains at 100% (eventually) you might as well enjoy ‘em while you can. Nobody’s gettin’ out alive.
It really comes down to this: “does God believe in code reuse?” /obscure
Didn’t say anthing about taste, it did mention that tomatos have been engineered to resist browning but it doesn’t mention that these tomatos don’t taste as good as your “garden variety” non “engineered” tomato. Years ago McDonald’s fries tasted better than they do know, they were formerly cooked in lard. I don’t eat french fries, potato chips or my home fried potatos, fried in bacon drippings, because they’re healthy, I eat them because they taste good. I eat a lot of apples, not because they’re healthy but because I like them and they taste good. Eventually were going to end up with the “soylent green” cookie that ‘s easy to ship requires no refrigeration or cooking and will provide us with all the nourishment we need. I prefer my BLT with a real ‘big boy’ tomato. I’m going for an apple now.
Thank you for that, it helps others easily gauge your knowledge base on the subject.
Be awful hard to match the taste of Yukon Golds; luv them new taters; we put in 400 lb seed tatoes every May; all golds.
So Frankenpotatoes that shed cooking oil and salt?
