WASHINGTON — The Pentagon said Friday it has designated five military bases inside the U.S. and two in Europe as quarantine areas for troops returning from the Ebola-response mission in West Africa.
Servicemembers will be isolated for 21 days at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington; Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Fort Hood and Fort Bliss, Texas; and Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia to check for symptoms of the deadly virus, Pentagon press secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby said. Army garrisons in Baumholder, Germany, and Vicenza, Italy, will also be quarantine sites.

Plans finalized Friday allow quarantine exemptions for servicemembers who travel through Africa briefly and have limited contact with people there, such as staff traveling with senior officials who are only there for a day or two, according to The Associated Press.
Under the new plans, civilians in the fight against Ebola will now be able to get medical treatment on military bases and free treatment from hospitals in the United States, Kirby said.
More than 1,900 Defense Department personnel are deployed to Africa, with the majority in Liberia and small contingent in Senegal, and that number could climb to 4,000

Ft Bragg is the home of the Airborne. Why shouldn’t Ebola make the leap?
I know, I know, bad joke early in the morning but I live less than a mile from the post boundary.
I thought we had closed Baumholder. H’mm why not with the medical folks at Ft. Detrick, MD — oh yes, to near to DC. And then there is Dugway Proving Ground. It is miles from anywhere.
The bases they chose make sense, it would be idiotic to try to use Ft. Dietrick for this purpose.
As an aside, I enjoyed how the writers of the X-Files renamed the fictional military bioweapons research lab to, "Ft. Marlena, MD." They also did a similar thing, scrambling the letters for Nellis AFB in a story about an Area 51 type facility they dubbed, "Ellins AFB."
Sounds like a science fiction movie I watched. And you never come out of the military base.
I recommended Ft. Detrick, MD, with total sarcasm. However, Dugway recommendation was not sarcastic. It is quite isolated; I almost got assigned there once.
I think that going into a routine cautionary quarantine doesn’t mean that you need to be separated from people by miles and kept in unpopulated regions of the United States.

why wouldn’t the US military quarantine all those suspected in a base outside the US, just in case?

So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.
