Lame: Barnicle Says Menino's Passing Could Be to Blame for Coakley Loss
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Mike Barnicle could be the early leader in the race for the lamest excuse for a Dem loss. On today's Morning Joe, Barnicle claimed that the death of Boston Mayor Thomas Menino "disrupted" the Massachusetts gubernatorial campaign, and that but for it, Martha Coakley might have "pulled it out."

Really? Menino might not have been the most silver-tongued speaker, but the five-time Beantown mayor was a popular figure in the Bay State. It's not hard to imagine that far from hurting Coakley's campaign, Menino's passing might have prompted some sympathy votes for her, a fellow Dem.

At the Menino motorcade, his last ride on the day of his funeral, some Thank You Mayor Menino signs were together with Coakley signs...

Boston Herald:
>>The Martha Coakley campaign denied it was responsible for attaching some of the Democratic candidate’s political signs to ones honoring the late Mayor Thomas M. Menino yesterday, after some voters called it poor timing.
“If it’s the case, she should do her own thing, not ride on Menino” said Therese Adams at the Orchard Gardens Community Center in Roxbury yesterday. “She needs to do her own thing if she’s going for governor. It’s best for her to start on her own.”
The Menino signs — widely distributed to mourners along the procession route to the late mayor’s funeral on Monday — were seen stapled to Coakley for governor signs.
But a spokesman for the Coakley campaign told the Herald the paired signage wasn’t organized by them.
“Nothing was coordinated with the campaign,” said Coakley spokesman Dave Wedge [Former Herald Reporter--rr]. Any Coakley/Menino signs “would be something somebody decided to do on their own,” he said.

But one volunteer for Republican Charlie Baker’s campaign derided it was an opportunistic move.

“It’s as though she’s riding his coattails,” Jim Doherty, a Baker campaigner in Southie, said yesterday. “It seems like her people couldn’t wait until he got into the ground before attaching the signs together. It’s just tasteless.”

But Biden was in town the day before, on Monday. Did he not ask Menino to stand up and vote for Coakley?

I somehow missed the news of Mennino’s passing. He provided some of the most ridiculous sports gaffes in political history. Other than John Kerry, who loved seeing the Packers play at Lambert stadium, Mennino had the next most famous ones...could not keep the names of Boston sports legends straight at any time.

Martha Coakley's loss is one of the best things that happened last night. She was behind the wrongful conviction of Gerald Amirault and his family for child sexual abuse, for which they spent years in prison. Nemesis finally caught up with her.
