China has successfully tested a homemade laser defense system specially targeting small-scale drones flying at low attitude.
The machine is able to shoot down various small aircraft within a two-kilometer radius and can do so in five seconds after locating its target, said a statement released Sunday by the China Academy of Engineering Physics, one of the system's co-developers.
Characterized by its speed, precision and low noise, the system is designed to destroy unmanned, small-scale drones flying within an altitude of 500-m and at a speed below 50m/s, it said.
The new laser system, which will either be installed or transported in vehicles, is expected to play a key role in ensuring security during major events in urban areas, the statement said, adding that a recent test saw the machine successfully shoot down more than 30 drones -- a 100 percent success rate.

Big deal. The ion cannon can cripple an imperial cruiser in orbit.
Hmmm...
No pictures provided of this claimed system in this government news outlet. Could be psy-ops to discourage bad boys and muzzies from attempting to buzz party bosses and public events with quadcopters or to make mini-drone attacks either kinetic or weaponized.
When do these hit the shelves at Walmart?
Which means they probably designed our anti-drone laser when they were here in school.
A Computer Game does not count
Cue Dr. Evil!
100 percent success on multiple targets is really very good... assuming the targets were simultaneous and not simply one after another
such a system of automated defenses would be very formidable if attached to large caliber rounds and synchronized across multiple defense units for automated target acquisition
Already available on AliBaba.com for $1.49 including free ePost from China to US.
They're already there: 30-06 with a $50.00 laser sight.
This system is not for use against modern UAVs, it’s clearly for use against RC helicopters with attached cameras like what were used in Hong Kong. This is just the Chinese police state being a police state.
Look for the Department of Homeland Security to start issuing them to local law enforcement to suppress coverage of whatever the local cops want to hide.
So make the surface reflect the laser? Just wondering.
