Harassed consumer scores $22.5K from Dish Network
New York Post ^ | 10/29/2014 | Richard Morgan

TV provider, Dish Network has been ordered by a federal judge to pay $22,500 to a West Virginia man after it made 31 calls to his cell phone to pestering him to pay an overdue bill.

It turns out the man, Chester Moore, was never a Dish customer and didn’t owe the Charlie Ergen-controlled satellite-TV outfit a dime.

Plus, Moore had alerted a Dish representative on two occasions of the screw-up. On both occasions, Dish’s reps assured Moore the calls would stop. But the calls — made by an automatic telephone dialing system — kept coming.

22.5? Basically geosynchronous orbit for satellites used by Dish. Coincidence?

This same thing happened to me a few years back when a company (I don’t remember who now) kept calling me on my cell phone over and over again trying to collect an unpaid bill that I had nothing to do with. They kept asking for a “John Somebody” who I had never heard of. This went on for nearly two months. I called their 800 number twice and asked them to quit calling me which they assured me they would but the robo calls kept coming, the last one warned that they would shut off my cell phone if I didn’t pay up (they had nothing to do with my phone service). Sure enough, the next day my phone shut down and I took it to Verizon to ask how this could happen and they had no idea how my phone was shut down. Verizon gave me a new phone and number and I no more problems. I got no money out of though like this guy did.

Meanwhile I can’t do anything about unsolicited sales calls to my cell phone, which is on the Do Not Call List, because the AG in my state determined that the calls were coming from Bulgaria!

Probably data miles. That’s what I’d use given the application of electromagnetic spectrum...

If they can no longer make money with anti-family brainwashing, they might as well give customers a last ditch message on how unimportant they are. Just remember that the customer is a slave and is always wrong.

I spent hours on the phone and chat with DISH...over a couple of years. A guy with the same name as mine gave them my email address. I tried to tell them that I was not their customer, but could never get them to take care of the problem. I would get payment notices, special offers, and finally disconnect notices. Again, chats and calls...I finally asked them to update ‘my’ account and remove the email address...haven’t heard from them since...

Swore I would never use DISH.

Unfortunately, Creepy Rob Lowe and Painfully Awkward Rob Lowe are delivering the check. And staying a while.

Don’t think I’ve had anyone from Bulgaria call me before. Don’t think I ever made a call to Bulgaria, or met anyone from Bulgaria, for that matter.

Yes, and you can thank AT&T for all of this, for giving these off-short “businesses” the phone lines to carry out their attacks on us. I filed two or three formal complaints to the FCC with all the requisite info. After a year, they wrote to me that they couldn’t do anything about the callers. The DNCL is a fraud perpetrated on the public. You just have to use Caller ID and not answer the phone for anyone you don’t know.

Doesn’t your cell phone have call blocker?

He had the same name as a former Dish customer.

But the company didn’t catch on and cease and desist.

Their customer service department needs to be fired.

Man, at $725 a call, if I could track down Heather from account services, I’d be a millionaire.

My home phone is pestering from a call from “Hello, this is Rachael from Credit Card Services. There is nothing wrong with your credit card, however . . . . yada yada.” I normally hung up on them. Then one day I stayed on the line till this guy came on. I told him I was stick and tired of getting calls from them and wanted them to stop. He hung up on me. The calls continued. But now the calls are no longer on my home phone and somehow the are now pestering me on my cell phone. Same ole Rachael and same pestering calls.

Doesn’t your cell phone have call blocker?”

I don’t know about other cell phone companies but I filled up my allotted call blocker list a long time ago. Also can block up to 500 email addresses prohibiting access and that, too, did not take long to fill with just a few days worth of possible spam emails.

Resorted to getting a couple of dummy email accounts and a dummy phone number for those sites where I am seeking much needed information and must leave an email address and phone number to gain access.

Personal phone and email spam has slowed down but solicitation calls to our business phone seem to remain pretty steady. If we have questions about the number on caller ID, we just don’t answer. If the caller really wants us they will leave a message.

You just have to use Caller ID and not answer the phone for anyone you don’t know.

That's been my policy since caller id. came on the scene. Last night I got a call from "restricted", it went unanswered too.
