Letters: 'Temple Town' is the new Jim Crow (Philadelphia)
Philly.Com ^ | 10/28/14

Google Maps a few weeks ago identified much of North Philadelphia as "Temple Town."

Temple University's encroachments upon North Philadelphia should no longer be shocking for it is real. While Temple University has officially denied any connection to this renaming, it appears clear that Temple University and developers are carving out a white enclave that in effect is no longer North Philadelphia. Most black folks will be unwelcomed.

What Temple wants is a white enclave of racial and class privilege. This makes Temple University and its developer friend not just gentrifiers, but guilty of resegregating Philadelphia on the model of South African apartheid.

This is a "New Jim Crow."

This form of Jim Crow is about urban space and land. It's about replacing black folks with upper-middle-class whites. It's about disrupting black communities and institutions. It's about disrespect. It's a return to the horrible past of blatant white supremacy.

In this respect, Temple is as bad as any white Southern oppressor from back in the day. The name of the game is a few crumbs off the table for some, but old-style white supremacy for the majority.

Temple's plans for North Philly are the same as its plans on how it will operate the university. Temple's faculty is overwhelming white: Blacks (4.6 percent) and Hispanics (2.7 percent). Minorities are a diminishing part of the faculty. Its top administrators are almost entirely white.

Over the last 15 years, there's been a dramatic decline in black students, especially from Philadelphia. Temple acts like it doesn't even want black kids from Philadelphia, and especially North Philadelphia. This applies to even the most gifted.

Since racial discrimination in home sales is illegal, this sounds like a Liberal Troll trying to form another mob.

Gentrification - happening in a number of large cities.

When the drive from the suburbs become too long the older inner city is “rediscovered”.

Older buildings are renovated. Those in poor condition are torn down and replaced by new construction. Folks running rental units find it profitable to sell for renovation or replacement.

The poor, usually black, are priced out and must move to other parts of the city where housing prices remain low.

I Havn’t lived in N Philly for many years but when I drove my wife by maybe 20 years ago the area near Temple looked bombed our. I have read over the years that the neighborhood was jut plain dangerous for student to live and walk in. It sounds like Temple has the money to raze the slum housing and make it safe. That blacks will not be allowed is nonsense.

Cry me a frikkin river. I’m drowning in a river of tears here my friends.

These crybabies are complaining about “segregation” when what they are REALLY upset about is DE-segregation.

It’s OK if black folk move into a white neighborhood, AND IT IS OK, and it is just as OK if white folk move into a predominantly black neighborhood. Get over it, crybabies!

I love it when one lefty group feels dissed by another lefty group and confront each other.

Same thing is happening with bill maher and the crazies from berkley regarding the mooselimb terrorists.

The college needs land to build new dorms and other builings. When my son was attending back in 2010 over 50% of students were forced to live off campus in slum areas. Minorites rule at Temple.

The "gibsmedat" mentality at work.

Buy all the "crumbs" you can afford, nobody owes you anything and it's doubtful that many sellers would refuse your money because of the color of your skin.

Before condemning temple Town thing Trayvon, think Michael Brown, think Chicago. Excluding thugs and murderers is a good approach to life.

The Trayvon/Michael profile saves lives

Here in NJ that is happening along the Hudson River as money flees NYC. The displaced poor blacks aren’t moving to other parts of the city, though (those are already taken by foreigners); they are being steered towards Pennsylvania. When you live on public assistance there is no need to be near jobs and schools...

When I attended Temple almost fifty years ago (yikes), if you got one block off of the campus you were in a war zone. My husband saw an adult student shot and killed on campus (I wanted to kill a white guy was the killer's excuse).

Sorry, I cannot feel sorry for this author.

We CANNOT have true racial equality in America until EVERY city — EVERY neighborhood — dare I say, EVERY SINGLE HOUSEHOLD — is exactly 12.6% Black!

Google, Exxon, IBM, Coca-Cola, Eli Lilly — ALL businesses MUST be 12.6% black!

(There will be an exemption from these rules for professional basketball and football teams.)

Black communities and institutions? So this Jim Crow is disrupting their Jim Crow?

Temple is right in the heart of the slummiest slum of all Philadelphia. I suspect this issue is two or three community organizers making a stink and the Inquirer picking up on it.

The very first woman the Inquirer highlighted in their big bad gentrification article last weeked was a Black landlord. She owns properties in the somewhat gentrified West Philadelphia area dominated by Drexel and Penn. She rents her properties to Black people only below market rate. That's illegal behavior but I don't imagine the DA will be knocking on her door anytime soon.

You still are.

My grandson goes to St. Joe's Prep and I've been down in the neighborhood quite a few times recently. Although things have gotten much less scary South of Girard Avenue, north of Girard is still Beirut.
