Newington, Conn. (WTNH) — Bah Humbug! It’s the wrong holiday, but some say the grinch came early and took Halloween from the kids at two Newington Elementary Schools. The principals at Ruth Chaffee Elementary and Anna Reynolds Elementary say leave the costumes at home.

That means 8-year-old Alyssa Montano can’t bring her pointed hat and broom to the classroom.

“What did you think when you found out you can’t celebrate Halloween at school?” we asked.

“It was stupid and weird because they shouldn’t take it away from other people,” said Alyssa.

Her mom, Lori, says she was the one to have to break the bad news to her daughter.

Hmmm....I’m not sure what the Rules were...and I don’t really know why....but nobody wore costumes at my Grade School, in North Carolina, back in the 60s. I think it was just understood that costumes were for later that night.

Of course, the school celebrated in other ways....and they had no problem with calling it Halloween.

Yep. That was my experience in the North, too. A separate, evening Halloween party, but some in-school Halloween decorations and references—just as there were for the other holidays celebrated by the majority of, or all, students.

Yes, my experience was pretty much the same here in my area of NC, also in the 60s. We didn’t go in costume to school but we got to draw black cats, witches, color construction paper pumpkins and jack o’lanterns, and one of my teachers even let us make up and write our own Halloween stories that we then got to read in front of the class (3rd grade). Not one person, that I’m aware of, ever got hysterical about it being called Halloween. We just did it, had a great time, and the next day it was all over and we were all looking forward with excitement to Thanksgiving. It was a great time to be a kid.

Three possible reasons the school didn’t allow costumes:

1. The school didn’t want the disruptions.

2. Christians objected.

3. Muslims threated to behead someone if the celebration was allowed.

I taught in a rural town where it was cultural. In many areas of the town, houses were spread out, so the kids wore the costumes to school and just went to a few houses or a small party. This was way back (early 1990s) and the school put a stop to it just because they could.

Real question, no insinuations, just a search for knowledge:

Why would Muslims object to Halloween?

IMO much better to study the Koranic prohibition against “infidels” possessing weapons of any kind. Muslims in America tend to be in favor of gun control for everyone except Muslims. Can’t wage jihad without weapons, as we have seen.

Back to topic: I really don’t understand why schools would cancel Halloween, which doesn’t promote any religion, so why the objection?

It was a great time to be a kid.

As surely as that's true, as surely will it nary be seen again.

Halloween was for the night, and there were no razor blades in the apples, etc.

Of course there were problems back then as well, big ones.
But it was still America - we were still strong and confident, and the future was still a time of hope . . .

That sounds like my school years too, except it wasn’t quite over the next day. That next day was for trading candy.

Same here, except it was the ‘70s for me. We had fun making decorations at school, and some teachers gave out candy, but that was as far as it went. The costumes came out at night-—and I mean that literally. Those were still the days when kids went trick-or-treating in the dark with flashlights.

Hallowe'en.... Hallowed Evening... Hallowed... Holy...

Can't have any of that.

Nor fun, nor freedom, nor candy.

In my elementary school, also in the 1960’s, we did, in fact, wear our Halloween costumes to school on Halloween, or most kids did anyway. This was on Long Island, NY.

The kids would all line up in the hallway during recess and, with marching music playing outside of the school, all the kids would march across the school parking lot and across the athletic field in a school-sponsored Halloween parade.

I remember one kid was wearing a white T-shirt with the word QUARANTINE on it, blue jean cut-offs, and he had big red spots painted on his face and legs.

Jeez... Newington banned Hallowe’en at schools. I remember Newington was a nice town when I had to go to NCH when I was a kid.

Or vote Republican... Newington I believe had a Republican mayor (last time I check it did). Maybe you can elect a Republican State Senator...

I did a quick search on who is offended by Halloween and came with the answer, Muslims.

Evidently Muslims pitched a fit over kids dressed as Seal Team Six or Bin Laden. I wonder how they would feel about a kid dressed as an ISIS fighter, carrying his own head.
