As best-selling novelist John Grisham prepares to publish his new legal thriller, he argues America's prison system has run out of control.
America is wrongly jailing far too many people for viewing child pornography, the best-selling legal novelist John Grisham has told The Telegraph in a wide-ranging attack on the US judicial system and the country's sky-high prison rates.
Mr Grisham, 59, argued America's judges had "gone crazy" over the past 30 years, locking up far too many people, from white collar criminals like the businesswoman Martha Stewart, to black teenagers on minor drugs charges and - he added - those who had viewed child porn online.
"We have prisons now filled with guys my age. Sixty-year-old white men in prison who've never harmed anybody, would never touch a child," he said in an exclusive interview to promote his latest novel Gray Mountain which is published next week....

His logic is insane. Adults look at child porn in the first place, why?
After an uproar began, Grisham issued an apology.
“Anyone who harms a child for profit or pleasure, or who in any way participates in child pornography — online or otherwise — should be punished to the fullest extent of the law,” the author said in a statement. “My comments made two days ago during an interview with the British newspaper The Telegraph were in no way intended to show sympathy for those convicted of sex crimes, especially the sexual molestation of children. I can think of nothing more despicable. I regret having made these comments, and apologize to all.”
Bought my last Grisham novel, that’s for sure.
If people didn’t watch it, no one would exploit children to produce it. Those that watch it belong in jail as they are contributing to these children being exploited.
Looks like his publisher might have had a word with him.
640 KFI am radio played the audio today. He is trying to justify it because a friend who is 60! was looking at child porn and spent 3 years in prison for it.
Prisons are too full? I agree. How about we start rapidly executing rapists, murderers, armed robbers, etc.? Oh and those who crave ‘generational intimacy’ also.

A little late for that apology. I read what he said. His comments were, and he is, despicable.
His friend lied to Grisham. It wasn’t 16 year olds. It was real images of child abuse with kids under 13. His friend is a Perv.
Grisham is full of it. We read the actually comment. He’s too late. His words are an empty apology.
