The Council of State Governments Committee on River Governance recently met in Yakima, Washington. As last years chair of that Committee, I traveled to Washington to join Representatives and Senators from Montana, Idaho, Washington and Oregon, as well as a delegation from British Columbia.
Our primary purpose was to discuss the impacts of the ongoing Columbia River Treaty negotiations between the United States and Canada.

Thanks for posting.
Sounds like Canada may be looking for ways of rattling the U.S. now that fracking is allowing us to buy less Canadian oil. Let Canada go back to building an economy on timber and pelts. Good luck, eh?
It may not effect the West coast but East of the Cascades would be devastated.
Canadas government has given the province of British Columbia near complete authority to either renegotiate or terminate the Treaty.
What does Washington (State) and Oregon want? It appears that the "US", which I read as the Feds, is dictating this new agreement. Yet Canada has given BC the right to make its own decisions.
More proof that liberalism so loves victims that it will create them if necessary.
For years California has wanted to tap into the Columbia. Oregon has never agreed to is, but for the right price it might’ve been possible. This would certainly nix that for sure.
If you would like more information about what's happening in Oregon, please FReepmail me.
I lost my Oregon list when my computer crashed recently, so please send me your name by FReepmail if you want to be on this list.
Obviously, this would not be in dispute if Obama would invade and annex Canada. If he ever thinks it’ll improve his poll numbers I imagine it’ll happen pretty quickly.
“Canadian Bacon” being pretty tasty.
After reading Senator Doug Whitsett's Newsletter (Oregon Senate District 28) it's enough to cause everyone along the US West Coast sit up and take notice. It's hard even to begin to cover all the utter stupidities of both the minuscule number of indolent and insane "environmentalists," and the political whores and bureaucrats who maintain the corrupt and devastating symbiosis with them.
The damage that they have created over the last 40 years is almost impossible to imagine.
California's Central Valley used to provide 80% of all the fresh fruits and vegetables consumed in the United States. Today, it is virtually a dustbowl. Dams, which were created over a century to create a complex network of life-giving water, as well as protection against third-world annual flood devastation, have been systematically destroyed.
In that long ago age, human beings were the intended recipients of the benefit of foresight, and the time available for recreation and leisure was non-existent. Survival was the driving force. Although it appears that that is no longer "real", it doesn't take long for infrastructure deterioration, deliberate or through neglect, to have an accelerating negative impact on the quality of life affecting the industrious and the ignorant, clueless population alike.
I hope that educated, hard working Freepers, of which there are many on this site, will be energized to read the newsletter...
Water? Indians? Food?, Floods? Literally Ignorant Arrogant Politicians? Who cares?
And after taking the time to calm down (it may take me days), contact their local Senators (Yes even the delusional Boxer and Feinstein.) to slap them back to reality.
The power cupidity of whoever proposed this "modification" to the Treaty with our critical neighbor and ally to the North is breathtaking. As is the arrogance which could only occur in the Age of Obama (Perfect Ignorance.)
It's like a 2 year-old pretending to Poker.
Making demands under those circumstances confirms the total absence of adult behavior.
Obama may be obsessed with "Standing with islam" in a crunch, I stand with the Canucks on this one. Big time. I hope the Canadians, after they stop laughing, tell Obama and his bureaucrats, Valerie Jarrett, whomever, to go p***s up a rope, and good luck to us. Washington, Oregon and a good chunk of California will get what they deserve. The horrible financial, as well as the social and political impact will reverberate for decades.
This was interesting. The Canadians, in exchange for electricity, provide flood control and steady river flows for US shipping and hydroelectricity. The goobers in the US want to keep more electricity, and reintroduce salmon to the upper Columbia basin. The Indians want to return to natural seasonal floods and low water like it was before there were any dams.
In short, the Americans want to disrupt the transportation, energy, and agriculture infrastructure for some fish, while the Canadians said the original deal was OK, but if you don’t like it, they’ll screw over the US AND get lots more farmland for themselves.
Canucks win, 1-0.
Perhaps you should actually read the Newsletter, and not simply make stuff up.
The Treaty is not about border waterways. It is exclusively about the management of that portion of the Columbia River management facilities entirely in Canada.
"The Columbia River Treaty was signed in 1961 and ratified in 1964. It essentially trades water storage in Canada for hydroelectric power generated in the United States.
"Extensive water storage was developed in Canada under the provisions of the Treaty. That Canadian water storage provides nearly 60 percent of all water storage capacity on the Columbia River. In fact, under current river management, Canadian water storage supplies virtually all of the seasonal downstream flood control capacity on the main-stream river in the United States."
" It also provides most of the water for the seasonal flows used for hydroelectric generation in this country. The repatriation of some of that electricity to Canada is called the Canadian Entitlement. That Entitlement is virtually the only ongoing benefit that Canadians derive from the Treaty."
Fearmongering?
Read the damned Newsletter. If you wish to accuse the Senator of lying, present your case.
