Two people were in critical condition in local hospitals Tuesday night after being mauled by four pit bulls near Bret Harte Elementary School in southwest Modesto.
A 911 call from a juvenile brought deputies to a home in the 800 block of Glenn Avenue at 5:59 p.m., where they found an elderly man in the yard being mauled by four pit bulls, said Sheriff Adam Christianson.
The deputies shot at the dogs, killing two and driving two into another yard.
Officers found an elderly woman inside the home, also with severe injuries from dogs.
Both victims are in critical condition at a local hospital, Christianson said, adding that no one else was injured.
After the victims were sent to the hospital, deputies attempted to capture the other two dogs. The dogs turned on the deputies, who shot them, the sheriff said.
“The threat to public safety has been eliminated,” Christianson said. “This was an unfortunate accident and certainly a reminder of how dangerous these dogs can be.”
Investigators were working Tuesday night to determine what happened and who owned the dogs.
Christianson said the owner or owners could be civilly and criminally liable for the actions of the dogs.
The sheriff said he did not know the names or ages of the two victims, but investigators are certain the dogs did not belong to them.

This is exactly what needs to start happening. It is clear to anyone with common-sense that pit bulls too often become violent. The statistics are out there. If someone decides to own one, they need to assume all risk. I hope they lose everything they’ve got.

How can they be so sure the dogs were not owned by the couple? Would it be unlikely that such elderly people would have custody of four wildly aggressive dogs, I would agree with that. The youth who called 911 was not mentioned anymore in the article. If he was absent when the officers showed up, the dogs are probably his, or were brought to the area by him. I think Pit’s need to be sterilized. I know many disagree as is their right to.
How awful. No way do I believe the owned did not know they were dangerous.
Sad. We’ve had more than forty dogs in the past 36 years. All makes, and models from mutts to specific breeds, but all magnificent. NOT one was a Pit bull, nor will there ever be a Pit Bull here at the ranch. Too many warnings, and we heed them.
As awful as Pit Bulls are, they are the only breed with an IQ equal to that of their owners.

I can see the attraction for an individual dog of that breed. I recall a mixed breed, a puppy, owned by a friend of mine. This puppy’s heritage was a very watered down version of Pit, but even with that minimal pedigreed, The dog displayed some of the classic behavior traits of the Pit Bull.
This dog was startlingly intelligent (almost as smart as a German Shepherd) and intensely obedient. He was a beautiful caramel color with a white muzzle. One day, someone broke in and stole my friends wallet, a tiny pistol that worked, his laptop computer and the puppy. That’s a down side if being too obedient, the crook probably just told the puppy to come with him, so he did, no leash needed.

I hate those damn things. Last week a boyscout in my neighborhood was attacked by two of them!

He hated the breed (IMHO with good reason).
The strange part is he got kicked off for nothing to with PBs...

Maybe when they found the elderly woman in the house there were no dog food, or dog food dishes in the house or outside it.
Yes he got tossed for something other than Pit bulls, but a lot of owners of the dog of peace I am sure complained alot. Chet did not find all the articles himself...he had others send him items as they did not want to be harassed by the pit owners...some of those posts were vicious...
