HMMM
Lets see, 15,000 members in the teachers union.
135,000 students
Now granted, Im not College educated, but it only takes grade school math skills to divide 135,000 by 15,000 to come up with an average class size of 9 students.
Even if you add the additional 65,000 students in Charter Schools, that still only works out to 13 1/3 students per class.
Now when I was in school (quite a few years ago, Ill admit) the average class size was between 25 and 30 students.
I fail to see what these teachers are complaining about.
Someone ought to point out that Pennsylvania has the oldest median age of any state other than Florida. Basically, kids grow up in Pennsylvania and then flee to other states as adults.
The implication here is that public education in Pennsylvania is a terrible investment even in purely financial terms -- because the taxpayers of Pennsylvania are basically paying to educate someone else's work force.
I'm sure the folks in Texas and North Dakota are laughing all the way to the bank. LOL.
I would like to show these union members what I, as a self-employed individual, have to pay in monthly premiums. And I don’t get a fat pension, either.
I have met people from India, Asia, Africa, various Caribbean countries. Places that don’t spend a tiny
fraction of what we do on education. All were better
educated than most Americans IMO.
It’s not about the money.
Perhaps the union could reduce their union dues to ease the minds of teachers?
HAH! Like that is ever going to happen. I wonder what the salaries are of the top teacher union people.
You reap what you sow. How long before the teachers union starts blaming Republicans for this...in 3...2..1...
Public school teachers...99% make the rest look bad.
Shhhh...hopefully in 10-20 years Yankeeland will only have 6 or 7 reps in the House since everybody left.
Since these are Government jobs you have to have managers managing the managers that manage the managers that manage the teachers....
Yes, but you have to remember that those “managers managing the managers that manage the managers that manage the teachers....” are in fact management and not “rank and file”.
Which means they shouldn’t be counted as part of those 15,000 members of the teachers union.
So, my rudimentary math skills still hold true.
9 to 13 1/3 students per class is still only half to 1/3 of what it was when I was a student.
Therefore, teachers...QUITCHERBITCHEN!
Khanacademy doesn’t have English materials. By chance do you know of a site covering English (reading, writing, sentence structure etc) that might complement Khan’s stuff?
I’ve got a 4-yo daughter that has already had some exposure to “lower Kindergarten” in India, where she was working on learning alphabet/words/letters and so on, and having moved back to the US so far we haven’t found anyplace where she could continue that work. All the “preschools” are little more than glorified babysitting, and cost a ridiculous amount of money.
So true. Schools are closed the entire summer, even as very few children are needed to bring the family farm crops to harvest. While children long ago ceased being a family's human resource as a home laborer, school systems are loathe to stop giving their employees extended vacations.
Sorry. Other than the standard fare (via google search) I know of none. even MIT open courses don’t have it.
They also bore intelligent kids. They actually damage them.
All the preschools are little more than glorified babysitting, and cost a ridiculous amount of money.
Don’t know where you are, or if they have any schools in your area, but check out The Goddard School. Our 4 year old grandson goes to one and loves it. They are taught the alphabet, to count to 100, and their colors. He’s even getting some elementary reading and math, and like I said, he just turned 4.
I think it is a wash. What they will now contribute to their health care could very well be offset by cancelling their union dues. Throw in performance bonuses and it’s over Johnny.
Having to pay something for your own healthcare! Why, that’s outrageous!
It’s criminal that they didn’t have to previously when they are living off hard-working citizens tax dollars, and making, what I am sure is way above average salary.
What percentage are able to connect the dots between their votes an their increased health insurance cost?
If they are teaching Common Core math then they are unable to connect any dots because they can’t count them.
