Redeemed: Former Ex-Gay Activist Renounces the Movement, Talks with Hatewatch
Hatewatch ^ | October 2, 2014 | Evelyn Schlatter

[Yvette Cantu] Schneider came out as a lesbian as a young woman, then converted to Christianity in the 1990s and spent more than a decade working with anti-LGBT groups and campaigns like the Family Research Council (FRC) and Focus on the Family. She also was active in the Proposition 8 campaign in California, which resulted in the outlawing of same-sex marriage in that state in 2008. (The ban has since been overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court.)

Schneider, who eventually married a man, was for years one of the key sources anti-LGBT activists cited as “proof” that people can change their sexual orientation. But in 2009, she began to question her beliefs.

In July 2014, she joined eight other founders, leaders and promoters of the “ex-gay” movement—a largely religious movement that claims therapy can “cure” people of their homosexuality—in joining the National Center for Lesbian Rights’ call for a campaign to end so-called “conversion” or “reparative” therapy within five years. Schneider has also donated some of the proceeds from her latest book, Never Not Broken: A Journey of Unbridled Transformation, to GLAAD, an LGBT rights group.

[...]

"I think the ex-gay movement will be dead within the next 10 years. As churches become more gay-affirming, parents and church leaders won’t seek parachurch ministries to “fix” in gay Christians what isn’t broken. The fact that the ex-gay movement has been a monumental failure with no real, lasting change in those who have sought to negate same-sex attractions and become heterosexual will become more and more apparent to the average lay Christian."

So what came first, Christianity or the desire for a way out?

It is sad to see that she has missed the point and maybe so have the ex-gay people. God wants us to be obedient - very often in spite of what we feel or think we just have to trust what He says is true and try to line up our lives with what he expects - maybe He will change those desires, maybe not. Maybe it is such a stronghold in a persons life that all they can do is try do what God says, sometimes fail, get back up again, rely on his forgiveness and start again.

43 “When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. 44 Then he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order. 45 Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation.”

“former” ex-gay
or former (now ex) gay?

It’s the wrong time of night to figure out logistics.

it shows me how homosexuals have a mental problem. I had to go to a dinner event the other night and there was a homosexual woman who brought her supposed lover.\

We had to sit next to them and all night these two homosexual women were disgusting, giggling like little girls, announced to us that this was her wife which all of us there found repugnant . the fat homosexual woman was pawing the other woman all night.

Some say when you get to talk to homosexuals then you find you don’t have a problem with them . After that night sitting next to them then I can safely say that all of us at that table have become even more against their agenda/

Well said. It’s. Like an alcoholic. Maybe it’s hereditary, maybe not. Don’t be a drunk.

So she became tempted by sin and instead of rejecting it she embraced it.

It didn’t say that she divorced her husband but it appears she may have.

The most noxious gay type is the one who marries an opposite sex person then either has the secret affairs or leaves the marriage to pursue same sex relations. That this noxious woman is being celebrated tells me of the lack of character among gays.

I knew a woman homosexual that truly embraced her lifestyle choice and believed she was “special”.

True evil is when someone is proud of their evil.

I think those who encourage and embrace it have a lot to answer. Love the sinner but hate the sin. Stop promoting it.

As Michael Brown recently wrote, for every one of these backsliders from the truth, there are hundreds, even thousands, of people who have left sexual depravity for good.

But the demonic homosexual Left will walk through fire to prevent that from coming to light.

I don’t doubt that same-sex attraction is real, but I don’t see any difference between it and any other sinful temptation. An alcoholic is certainly tempted to drink alcohol to excess, a liar tempted to lie, and an adulterer tempted to cheat on his spouse.

Like you wrote, the Lord may choose to free us from those temptations, but in my experience, a weakness typically remains a weakness. Once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic, but God promises us strength to overcome. I don’t know of anywhere in scripture where it says He’ll remove temptation, but as we grow in Christ, we do become better disciplined (generally speaking).

I feel sorry for those who suffer from same-sex attraction, but the Lord has His purposes and must be trusted. If it means a lesbian must remain celibate, that is far better than burning in Hell.

I don't understand this article.

She was a homosexual. She started following Christ and changed her behavior. And somehow believes she knows enough about Christ to talk about changing how Christ is practiced/reached, and that she is at her final spiritual destination.

She really thinks the Bible just didn't get around to dealing with homosexuality, and now in 2014 it's finally perfecting itself?

The hatred that emanates from these people is truly pernicious. Their deviant sexuality defines their entire universe!

Oh well, lunch at Chick Fil-A tomorrow for me. They’re closed on Sunday.

I guess we are not supposed to ask about pedophiles. If they can not be changed, what are we supposed to do? Ignore them and what they do to our children???

What about people who practice beastiality? Can they change according to this group? Or is this abnormal, but homosexuality isn't???

You got it. But with liberals promoting homosexuality and promiscuity as healthy and normal, eventually you’ll end up with a lot more drunks as the culture demands you have sex with anything/body that doesn’t run away. Come to that, I’m pretty sure rapists feel they were born that way, too, so everybody’s up for, um, grabs.
