Mary O'Hara is one of a kind. She had a successful career as singer and harpist - then went into the nunnery. Many years later, she left the nunnery and began making music again. I think her earlier work was better - not for the quality of her voice - her selection of works in her later career was not, shall we say, what it was in her youth.

Still, a stunningly beautiful voice, exquisite phrasing and consummate musicianship.

This song, among many others from my ancestral home, resonates strongly with me. The text was translated into English by the poet James Clarence Mangan, and is well known as "My Dark Rosaleen."

It may not seem on point to our Canteen, but I post it here in memory of the fifteen of my sixteen great-great grandparents who came to this country as refugees from An Gorta Mor - the sixteenth was a third-generation descendant of my 4-greats Grandfather Samuel Brison, a Scot who left after Culloden.

They, with many others from all over the World, helped make this greatest of Nations. They came in steerage, in "Coffin Ships". They all strove unceasingly in menial tasks - as butlers, groomsmen, laborers and domestics. They reared their children to become productive citizens of the New Nation. They fought and fell in Battle to preserve our Freedoms.

I guess I'm going pretty far afield, but the songs of my ancient Homeland evoke strong feelings for the Nation my ancestors came to, helped form, and left to me.

I am not an Irish American. I am an American of Irish descent. I should probably add, of Irish dissent. We added something to that.
