Washington (CNN) -- The Boston Herald And Its Cartoonist Apologized Wednesday for a cartoon that quickly drew criticism on social media for being racist. A satire on the recent news that an intruder got farther into the White House last month than previously known, the cartoon depicts the intruder sitting in President Obama's bathtub, asking him if he has tried the "watermelon flavored toothpaste." Critics quickly pounced on the watermelon aspect of the cartoon, arguing the cartoonist was playing off a stereotype that African Americans are particularly fond of the fruit.

Oh noes! They like watermelon! Insulting!

Big freaking deal.

I was hoping this was about how greens are really red on the inside.

I find the cartoon to be a bit puzzling, but not offensive. There seems to be an intentional use of the watermelon/ethnic stereotype, but when applied to a fictitious intruder into the white house, it is as if the author is attempting to mock liberal stereotypes of conservatives. Anyway, people sure are thin-skinned these days.

I am white ( Scots-Irish—American ; descendants of Ulster Scots who first migrated to America in large numbers in the early 18th century) , but I love watermelon, fried chicken, grape juice and blues music. But even worse, I would kill for a potato and I know how to squeeze $2 out of a nickel.

It’s not the color of a mans skin, it’s how THIN his skin is that irks me.

Everyone stereotypes every person, every single day. Honest men admit it, the others lie and say they don’t.

So there..... Black people like watermelon and fried chicken. Yep, I am certain that the BLACKS LOVE WATERMELON AND FRIED CHICKEN. LOL

How soon before the Stereotype Police show up to haul me away?

I am so very ashamed and my white guilt makes me want to by millions of Black people lots and lots of watermelon and fried chicken.

I don’t see why blacks get up set over watermelon jokes. The worst cartoon I ever saw was by Bill Mauldin back in 1968 showing GEORGE WALLACE setting on a hill eating watermelon, spitting out the seeds and saying (If I remember correctly) “Man! Things are so great here I ain’t never going back home!” This had to do with his popularity in the NORTH when he ran for president back in 1968.

That cartoon was also ran in 1972 when he ran again before being shot.

My completely ignorant guess about the watermelon thing:

Although the watermelons they sell in the grocery stores nowadays are pretty awful, I believe vine ripened locally produced watermelons were absolutely delicious when I was a kid. Sugar was insanely expensive back in the day. Most people wouldn't have eaten sweets often, and watermelons aren't the easiest thing to grow in the garden.

I figure that a ripening watermelon in a garden would have been a prime target for thieves. Black people would be the natural scapegoats for this thievery, even though white teenagers would be the most likely culprits.
