First Snow of winter
Iceland Review ^ | September 26, 2014 18:48 | Benedikt Jóhannesson

Officially, the first day of winter in Iceland is not until October 25 this year.

Someone does not seem to be aware of this, since it started snowing in some places in north Iceland this afternoon. The accompanying photo was taken on Þverárfjall on the way from Sauðárkrókur in Skagafjörður.

Too bad Obama didn't make his Climate Change speech from Iceland and experience the Gore Effect.

Snow in Colorado also. I guess US winters are not newsworthy.

Context is important. The first day of winter doesn’t mean much, compared to the typical first snowfall of fall.

The Icelanders seem to think this snowfall was very early this year at this locale. Pity, it was a perfect site for an Al gore picnic.

Snow in upper Sierra range this morning.

Not much, but it's still up there from what I can see outside. It's barely 50 degrees F out right now, blustery and drizzling cold rain. Not a moment too soon, either.

Farmer's Almanac says this Winter will be cold and dry. Hope they're wrong.

Well, in Phoenix, if there is going to be snow, it will either be on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Kind of a small window.

However, seasons there are easy. They start with June, July and Aug. being summer. Then Sept., Oct. and Nov. are fall. Dec., Jan. and Feb. are winter. Then March, April and May are spring.

Swim season is typically mid-April to around the first week of October.

Iceland has a traditional calendar which defines the first day of summer and winter in its own way. See http://www.icenews.is/2009/10/25/welcome-to-the-icelandic-winter/:

"... Iceland recognises the first day of summer as the first Thursday after the 18th April and the first day of winter as the Saturday between the 21st and 27th October."

I helped the U.S. Navy fight the “cold war” while stationed at the NATO base in Keflavik, Iceland for a year and a half in the early 1970s. Quite a desolate place. Was very glad to get back to Kentucky. I saw no signs of warming, global or otherwise, while I was there.
