I totally agree with everything you say. There are a lot of reasons to oppose vouchers under the type of government we now have and are likely to have in the foreseeable future, no matter if the left or the putative “right” is in power.
And those schools are perfectly capable of offering scholarships or free or reduced tuition of their own volition, locally, and under their own control and rules, without any input from government. This is a perfect example of “I’m from the government and I’m here to help”, which is the death knell to liberty. Plus, when the schools do it, they can vet the students, as is and should be their right, to avoid problems which will disrupt the school, and disrupt the right the of other students (whose parents are paying big money and possibly making real sacrifices, as you pointed out), to have their children be there and actually learn.
I really believe though, that the only way to avoid government meddling in a child’s education, is to homeschool, and even there, the states have varying levels of government oversight.
“Allow vouchers though a constitutional amendment.”
Not sure why anyone would think we need a constitutional amendment to implement a voucher program. After all, the GI Bill is a voucher program. And, has been in effect for almost seventy years. And, according to many economists and social scientists was largely responsible for the post WWII economic boom that lasted about forty years or so. And, created the American middle class, the engine that powered our economy. So, in case you missed it, being that I am a product of the GI Bill, I am all for vouchers.
Mary Burke is an invented personality - a little of this, a little of that - and presto chango - a newly minted candidate with a vague personal history, dubious work credentials, promoting as her own Harvard Business School generated economic plans she ripped word for word from other Democrats, and even her website used a plagiarized privacy policy.
She is even less of a zero than the Great Zero himself.
“Get back on the plantation, negro children !” — Mary Burke
From which source did Mary plagiarize her educational policy?
*SNORT* :)
Actually, I am with you on this. But, it seems that every attempt at vouchers is thwarted by a host of activists who claim the vouchers are unconstitutional. And there are plenty of judges to go along with it.
Vouchers are not the libertarians' choice, but they allow anybody to go to a private school, it kills the teachers' union and yanks the money from bloated bureaucracies.
