Liberia’s Ebola Victims Dying at Home Amid Shortage of Clinics

MONROVIA, Liberia — The family of the sick man, who had endured Ebola’s telltale symptoms for six days, took him by taxi to treatment centers here in the capital twice, only to be turned back at the gate each time for lack of beds. He died at home, his arms thrashing violently and blood spewing out of his mouth, in front of his sons.

“We had to carry him home two times because they could do nothing for us,” said Eric Gweah, 25, as a team of body collectors came to retrieve the corpse of his father, Ofori Gweah, 62. “The only thing the government can do is come for bodies. They are killing us.”

So many Ebola victims are dying at home because of the severe shortage of treatment centers here in Monrovia, Liberia‘s capital, that they are infecting family members, neighbors and others in a ballooning circle of contagion.

Only 18 percent of Ebola patients in Liberia are being cared for in hospitals.

Didn’t they raid one clinic and shoot all the doctors and nurses?

So hey would rather die at a hospital than at home?

“... symptoms for six days, took him by taxi to treatment centers here in the capital twice, only to be turned back at the gate each time for lack of beds.”

Thus, two taxi drivers, and many of their passengers were also exposed (and maybe infected).

Someone posted that those who are exposed but don’t catch it have both the disease AND the antibodies in them. Making them walking living WMDs in which the sale of a few pints of their immune blood can isolate both disease and antibodies and become bio weapons. I don’t know if that is true..

The healthcare system is just not designed to handle something like a plague. Even in this country most victims of a mass outbreak would be dying at home in bed because there is no room in the hospital and maybe there is a fear of whatever triage centers spring up in stadiums and large parking lots.

and the taxi drivers families and the passengers families and all their co-workers and friends and fellow bus passengers and stuff... on and on like a spider-web... and there were already no beds.

My first thought about this article is that the New York Slimes is doing its usual dirty job of trying to the lay the groundwork for the next thing the _resident wants to shove down our throats against out will, namely, bringing ebola patients here.

No nightly news about our 3000 troops sent by Obama to the middle of that hellhole? Where are the embedded reporters?

Ebola is killing people faster than global warming.

And that’s totally not far-fetched. He has had no concern for the potential epidemics to be spread by all the illegals he let in. The leftist public school administrators are helping that along by not requiring vaccination records for the illegal influx into public schools. I can only hope that when the outbreaks begin, he gets bit right in the arse, in a very direct way.

Sadly, denial of Ebola is still rampant in some countries and facilitating the spread of the disease. So Ebola is still rapidly spreading everywhere in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. (World Health Organization says worst case scenario has 1.4 million Ebola infections in those countries)

On the bright side, the World Health Organization says that the disease has been successfully contained in Nigeria and Senegal (no new cases reported in 21 days, the Ebola incubation period)

In the US, we’ve got 2 hospital beds for every 1000 people. But 75% of those are occupied at any given time. So we have about 0.5 open beds per 1000 people.

So in an metropolitan area like Nashville with 1.8 million people, we just have to make sure that no more than 9000 are sick at once. And of course if it’s flu season all bets are off, because the hospitals are usually full.
