Disarming Realities: As Gun Sales Soar, Gun Crimes Plummet (Forbes:May,2013)
Forbes ^ | May 14, 2013 | Larry Bell

A couple of new studies reveal the gun-control hypesters’ worst nightmare…more people are buying firearms, while firearm-related homicides and suicides are steadily diminishing. What crackpots came up with these conclusions? One set of statistics was compiled by the U.S. Department of Justice. The other was reported by the Pew Research Center.

According to DOJ’s Bureau of Justice Statistics, U.S. gun-related homicides dropped 39 percent over the course of 18 years, from 18,253 during 1993, to 11,101 in 2011. During the same period, non-fatal firearm crimes decreased even more, a whopping 69 percent. The majority of those declines in both categories occurred during the first 10 years of that time frame. Firearm homicides declined from 1993 to 1999, rose through 2006, and then declined again through 2011. Non-fatal firearm violence declined from 1993 through 2004, then fluctuated in the mid-to-late 2000s.

You don’s suppose there is some sort of connection between these two trends, do you?

Hard to say. The violent crime rate has been trending down for decades while gun ownership has gone up. Unless you can prove that the presence or potential presence of a gun by the intended victim caused the perp to think twice, then you have only correlation without causation.

If the number of HANDGUN violence is dropping like a stone, while the (reported) HANDGUN violence is growing horribly in the inner cities, do these statistics tell us anything?
I’m truly saddened by what these statistics mean to me.
I will be roundly criticized for this but I must say, “Al and Jesse, where the heck are you when you are needed?”

I don’t believe that violent crime statistic for a moment.

Are you going to tell me Chicago has fewer violent crimes today than twenty years ago?

We all know better than this. Why repeat that lie that is foisted off on us continually?

Departments across the nation are admitting they have had pressure brought to bear to reclassify violent crimes downward.

We need to avoid the big lie IMO.

the proper graph to show is number of guns in us citizens hands, per year, along with number of accidental shooting deaths/year, and number of self-defense shootings/year, and number of criminal homicides by gun/year.

see the numbers of the deaths will be going down as the number of guns among citizens has risen greatly.

we have a lot more guns in the public’s hands but a decreasing amount of deaths from them as the years go on.

It’s INVERSE WILD WEST. Shove it libtards.

I doubt there is a holster big enough to fit Senator Lugar inside of. There are many made for the Luger pistol.

Correct. I’m as pro-gun as anyone else, but I suspect the main causes are a decline in the under 30 population, and more criminals in prison longer.

While that may be true, it is also true that the dramatic increase in gun ownership did not cause a detectable increase in crime. Any claim from anti-gunners that decreasing gun ownership is NECESSARY for a decrease in crime is proven absolutely false.

Well, it is hard to lie successfully about things like the total murders in a particular year. But I would guess that despite the numbers of murders in the inner city, murders outside those areas has gone down. As for the violent crime rate, the bureaucrats can reduce the number of crimes by counting only those convicted of violent crimes and ignore the ones who plea bargain down.

FREAKECONOMICS suggests crime rates are decreasing because of the number of abortions since roe v wade and the probability many of those aborted would have become criminals. certainly possible but not a justification. it is also hard to determine how many crimes are not committed because the “victim” looks and acts like they might be armed. so 10 folks may not get robbed even though only 4 of them are armed because the other 6 might be. also serious conceal carry folks take additional classes and read so avoid dangerous areas and take other precautuons to preclude having to draw and shoot.

I believe the conclusion, but if the DOJ came up with it, it was by accident.

Those sound like rational thoughts. I don’t know what to tell you.

Has gang banging stopped? No. Have drive-bys stopped? No. I did read an article specific to rapes, that addressed them being reclassified down to simple assault in many instances.

We have home invasions on the rise. That seems pretty violent to me. People are getting shot even if they comply.

Look at the knock out phenomenon. Think we’re hearing about every one of those? Those are very violent.

It’s a whole new category of crime.

I’m not faulting you or even saying I think you are crazy to believe it. In my gut, I can’t buy it.

I believe it started when Clinton “supposedly” put those 100,000 more cops on the street. He simply armed forest rangers and the like. There were other categories too.

Then he had to say his actions lowered crime, so the Lefty Justice department made an effort to make crime reporting show the improvement. I think that carried on into the Bush administration and own down to now.

Who is going to demand stats be kept accurately, when they’ll get heat for crime going up on their watch? Nobody.

Thanks for the response. Appreciate it.

I read the article to see what you were talking about - couldn't find it - Chicago is mentioned as having a 15% increase due mainly to gang-related shootings. The article seemed to be fairly accurate/on the up and up.
