A friend in need is a friend indeed. God bless the Kurds!

Arbil is 88 km from Mosul. Last I heard Mosul is in IS hands.

You are going to need a fairly large ground force to protect that airbase.

What’s the point in announcing operations?

Where’s the Iraqi air force? ISIS has no “air force”. Where are the billion “religion of peace” forces and why aren’t they crushing the “hijackers” of the “religion of peace”?

The Saudi’s have an air force, why aren’t they participating?

It would be nice if everyone who has a dog in this fight, participated.

"You are going to need a fairly large ground force to protect that airbase."

Along with ground crews. And Pilot extraction helos. And ground crews for them. And logistics people. And medical teams. And more ground forces for protection of the larger footprint of ancillary troops....

Islam is not a homogeneous community. I know, I know, it is Freeper doctrine that there is a homogenous religion of peace, but that is not now nor ever has been the case. The FReeper orthodoxy has pretty much always been wrong

The purpose of the current operations is to establish lines, borders if you will, between the denominations, subgroups.

The Sunni group has for the present been captured by the radical wackos. The Iraqi army now Shia has no desire or motivation to recover the Sunni lands in the north or those occupied by the Kurds.

There is no overwhelming desire by anybody to reestablish Iraq as per the Status Quo Ante. Iraq and Syria are no more. The borders of the surviving new states are in flux and being decided with the assistance of some bombing of targets to be denied to ISIS.

To comprehend what is in process, it is first necessary to forget what was Iraq and Syria. President Obama is one of the few that has not yet understood the reality. I suspect he might really know but is deathly afraid of losing Iraq on his watch and will never say so. The US Air Force operating out of Erbil gives strength to this concept.

Reality is a new Sunni state along the rivers across Iraq and Syria to some as yet established point. I suspect that point includes Aleppo. It may extend to include a coastal outlet. Once the borders are established in what was Iraq, the effort will return to Syria where Assad will have a real fight on his hands against the battle hardened forces with the captured heavy weapons.

For one thing, It helps vulnerable Democrat candidates in November for Obama to appear to be doing something.

This is all a waste of money and time. Obama is not committed. Cripes, he can’t even bring himself to refer to a group as Islamists which is named Islamist State. And refuses to admit its a war. As soon as one plane is shot down all hells going to break loose at home - with his base. And Obama is going to panic.

Sounds resonable. Should have been done at the end of Desert Storm. Could have turned out any worse than what we have now. I remember it was suggested and was shot down. Everything is clearer in hindsight.

Exactly. Let the Sunnis, Shia, Kurds, denominations, subgroups fight it out. Then we will see the "religion of peace" victors. If the "hijackers" of the "religion of peace" win, then we will see our enemy standing over the skulls of the peaceniks.

/foreign entanglement (Where's Cindy Sheehan and the vocal American peaceniks when you need them? Are they bloodthirsty now?)

Especially if it is shot down with one of our weapons.

To give al bagdaddy time to get to turkey. Make the optics reflect fighting terrorism but in actuality (since democrats dont get the truth anyway) make sure there is no major damage. The Rules of Engagement will be very restrictive.
